I remember  So annoying about the other thread. Watch this one get pulled as well.

We should def get a new one for may. :wall:

Definately repot them into much larger pots, you might want to scrap one of them - choose the weakest. This mini pot you have will certainly run out of nutrients and Im guessing all the roots will be matting together so time is of the essence in saying that I think courgettes will survive no matter what ( eg the seedling you lob into your compost heap will probably grow, (courgettes are v hardy shall we say!)

I have my one seed in a large pot and it needs changing probably this weekend to be honest, I was hoping i wouldn't have to pot mine out until a couple of weeks later as I have a huge pot in the centre of the terrace which the bush will fill Im sure.

currently mine is in a pot aBOUT 25CM across if you have a look on my home page I think there is a pic there from last week?

Thanks :) I bought a couple of growbags today, but now reading this, I wish i'd got pots instead. Doh!! Will they be ok in a growbag? I was hoping to plant 2 of them as the bags are quite big, will that be ok? If not, i'll go and get some pots tomorrow.

Your pictures are great :) The plastic trug you have a photo of, would that be suitable for the courgettes? I have seen them around and they'd be quite handy as I can bring them inside if the weather does get worse.

6 have grown and out of all of them, only 1 looks a bit pathetic (bless it!) The rest look really healthy, so i'm probably going to give them away rather than kll them (and hope that mine don't die and the others grow!)

OK, another question (sorry to be a pain) Can they go outside yet? I live in the South West so it's quite nice here at the moment, but i'm a bit worried about them getting too cold.

    Thanks for all your help.

Sorry I don't know about courgettes as I'm gonna plant mine in pots but tomatoes and peppers do well in grow bags.

    HTH and good luck :D

Thank you :) The peppers have made an appearance but still look a bit sad, but the tomatoes are doing a lot better.

I use the compost from growbags into pots as i think they are too shallow for planting. Courgettes are big hungry plants so will need lots of watering and regular feeding when they get going.

As for the weather, I keep telling everyone to get a min/max thermometer because you can tell for yourself when it's ok for the plants to go out, it's still surprisingly cold as my temps (SE) are still 3/4C in my greenhouse overnight. That's still too cold except for the hardiest plants.

I have alpine strawberries in my garden at the mo and they are good. I am however waiting for my rocket garden order (a present to me for moving) and that is coming in two weeks which has strawberry plants in it. I think so long as they don't have flowers on them you should be ok. I would say plants though rather than seeds, they seem much easier- just like tomato plants!

can i just ask how you started off your alpine strawberries? i got a pack of seed and sowed it in an unheated propagator with the lid on last month, but nothing has come up yet... should i get another pack and start again or wait?

thanks, will check out rocket garden as well

Tody i had an hour in the garden, sowed parsnip and carrot (seed tapes) in my large raised bed (2m x 1m).

Sowed a few broad beans, sowed cobnut squash (the latter, in the plastic growhouse) for now. Recieved my order of scaffolding net off ebay and placed a large length of it over the carrot and parsnip grow bed.

Managed to pick up a couple of lots of cheap plastic Morrisons black pots (8 for 99p) and my daughter lugged 8 reduced bags of compost into the car and then out of the car and into the back garden. This has to be the end of my compost purchases surely?

I am really enjoying this GYO hobby though and am looking forward to the day when i can go out back and pick our dinner.

    Hi freaky

I dont know if you can see this on my home page but in the middle of the sequare raised "thing" in the middle of the roof there is this round pot that is sort of balanced on the square? Im putting the courgette in there.

Yes they will do really well in growbags, better than pots. TBH, you will have to use probably more compost in pots than gropwbags IYSWIM as youll have to keep changing the compost as you "pot up".

im not sure about outside yet. I might stick mine out today to "harden off" - then back in before it goes dark. im in london and it was supposed to be 2 degrees yesterday night . I definitely think this is WAY too cold for courgette as courge is mainly water - see what happens to a courge if it is too cold in your fridge. Freezes then defrost into sludge. Im sure the plants are not ready for it yet. to be fair your are WAY too small yet. ( imo non-expert opinion lols)

RHS says we are well early!!
    sowing
Sow two or three seeds 2.5cm (1in) deep outdoors in late May or early June and cover with cloches, jars or plastic; leave in place for two weeks, or as long as possible, after germination. Thin the seedlings to leave the strongest one.

For earlier crops or in cold regions sow seeds on their side 13mm (0.5in) deep indoors in 7.5cm (3in) pots of compost from mid- to late April at 18-21C (65-70F). Harden off before planting outside in early June.
    [/QUOTE]

Patty pan growers should be putting them outside in the day time now though.

    Morning all

Well i am pleased to announce that my early potatoes are doing well and i have recently panted my lettuce seeds so have fingers crossed on them.

Todays question is about broccoli!! I took a notion to buy some plants yesterday and they came in one pot with approx 8 plants (i think). I have just tried to transfer them to a pot and the roots were all tangled really badly. I pulled some apart and put some in joined together. What should i have done :o

:( no replies to my query yesterday - its done now but would still ike to konw for future reference.
If anyone can help that is :rotfl:

I can't believe how much compost I've used so far. Was counting it up last night and so far I've used 380l! I've another 70l in the garage, but I have a feeling I might need just a bit more. I'm using the Asda stuff just now, it isn't bad but it is really compacted, hard work to get it out of the bag!

If it makes you feel better I stopped counting after 500litres last year and I only grew some stuff in pots. I had a veg patch too.

I'm trying to be good this year but already up to 240l mark......:D
