  • My parents supported me well until I was earning, and have offered to help out on my first home as they did with my siblings. They also insist on helping with our wedding costs. They want to be fair and for us to have the best start we can.

Since earning I've looked after my own finances, and try to save enough so that I'll not need supporting. I'd help out my parents financially if they needed it, but they're doing pretty well so I usually just get them gifts or take them to nice restaurants as a kind of thank you.

For my OH, it's the opposite. In their culture, it's normal for kids to give their parents money once they start earning. Makes it a bit harder to save for a deposit!

I've never had a cash handout. But my dad did pay for my solicitors fee's when I moved into my first place, think they were £800.

He also helped me by buying my car off me at the time, and giving me the option of buying it back later, as it was on a loan, and was a stumbling block at the time.

Apart from that, they have helped me in other ways, with the house when it needed a lot of DIY outside of my skills! They just didn't have the money to help me, or my sister out. Though I'm not sure they would of, to too much of a degree if they did as they are firm believers of earning your way. If they did have the money, I would think it would have been very much a case of the car, where I have to give up something for the money, or at least do something for it. Personally, I think that's fair.

The one thing they did do though, was not charge me rent to live under their roof while I was trying to get my own place, which was a help, for which I am grateful!

Not sure how I would actually approach the subject of asking them for financial help!

Must admit though, used to get very jealous of others having their driving lessons paid for, car bought for them for passing etc. Money for passing GCSE's.

However, I bought a car for 50 quid, little fiesta, and learnt quite a bit about fixing them (had to!) so was a valuable lesson.

Forgot about this thread....... my new car idea .... know how much those transporters are? Oh... only about £30k! So as far as approaching the parents for money, I really don't think I'd have the guts to ask for that :D

Might as well accept the fate. I'm getting older, I'm skint, and, although it so goes against my previous beliefs, the idea of keeping up appearences seems more and more important... :( .....that'll be a ratty galaxy on HP then :rotfl:

My Mum & Step Dad have lent me loads over the years, I don't like asking, but they are good enough (?) to say if they don't want to lend- if they think its a waste of money or whatever- and I always pay it back. They could never realistically give me any amount significant enough to help with a house purchase, although I think like GD says they might pay for fees/ surveys etc.

I'm pretty much self sufficient & always have been. Looks like my kids will be too.... oh well, at least you don't need to worry about them trying to bump you off for the inheritance :D

    Ahh forgot the kids.

Do they NEED windows? You could install 2 benches and some seatbelts, get it certified, and tell them it's the mystery machine.

Let's face it, windows are probably not needed. With your hibicus all over it (that sounds rather bizzare to me!) it's probably fair to say they wouldn't wanna be seen in it anyway :p
