  • Sorry to bring up this old thread, but Im havingproblems with my KA.

Engine light came on, started coughing and spluttering etc. To cut a long story short garage say it needs the ecu mending. Has to be sent away and will cost about £500:eek:

This is because the coil pack went and caused the ecu to spike?

Is this right do you think? I know nothing about cars and dont want to be ripped off, but really need my car.
    Any thoughts please.

when quoted £500, try another garage.
  • I have spoken to two garages. one said 200- 300 just to send ecu away and repaired not including labour etc for taking it off and refitting a tricky job so im told??

other garage is saying 500 for everything.

in my MR2 the ECU is bolted on behind the boot carpet and in the Volvo i pop the bonnet, remove the lid from the ECU house and pull it out, neither if them are very difficult.

If you can take it out yourself, click the ecu doctor link further up the page and drop them a mail with the problem and see if they can help.

Although a quick Google shows they could be right as it's behind the dash on some models
  • Thanks, going to see if i can ring ecu dr later. I expect i will have to get it done but its such a lot of money!

I have googled it but as I know very little about cars it does not make much sense to me.

  • Thanks, have rang ecu dr, they are quite a bit cheaper, anyone else used them or know if they are good how long they take etc please.
  • There's a few recommendations on the thread already and my Volvo has an ECU Doctor sticker on it, so they do seem to be legit and worth using.
  • Yes thanks they seem to be well thought of and lady I spoke to on phone seemed helpful.
Going to get garage to speak to them so hopefully it will beabit cheaper.
    Fingers crossed anyway!
