Claim compensation from Comet, any hope?

Hi,

I bought a new oven from comet and paid for it, plus delivery and installation.

The oven arrived last Monday and the installation guys told me they would not install because the wall 'looked like wallpaper' it is Artex.

I called comet them several times telling them that Artex is not flammable and can they install the oven, to which they said its part of their regs that you put a steel sheet/splashback on the wall first.

They also said they would install the splashback when they came to fit the oven.

OK no problem, I bought a 900x600 steel splashback for £50.

Comet said they would install on saturday.

Saturday I get a call from the installers on the way to mine, I tell them they will have to fit the steel splashback, to which they reply that they have no idea how to do this, they dont have the adhesive in the van to do this, does the splashback have holes to drill onto wall?

I say no problem I'll drill the holes, which I did before they arrived.

They arrived and said walls are fine for the oven! no splashback needed and they put oven in.

I'm stuck with a splashback worth around £50 with holes in it so i cant return.

Can I claim compensation on this?

Thanks
Jason

EDIT: spoke to comet again and they refuse to compensate as they say I could've taken the artex back to brick instead of buying the splashback, but I was told I needed it by the installation guys and the bottom line is I didn't need anything?!

Dunno. Have you even asked? Or instead of spending 5 minutes on the phone to their customer service, have you just come straight onto here to start asking for compensation?

    Do this;

Ring them up. Explain the situation. Be polite and courteous. Ask if they are willing to help you out in any way.

Then you can come back here and whine.

I spent more than five minutes being bounced around their customer services last week, It seems like I have to explain myself several times to different people, I'll give it another go, I thought maybe a letter would be better?

    Hi JasonP

My name’s Phil and I’m from Comet.

If our installers have given you incorrect information regarding the splash back then we will certainly consider your compensation request, however, I will need further information from you so that I can investigate this matter further.

If you would like to send me an e-mail via the link below with your purchase information, I will look into this further:-

    https://comet.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/comet.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php

You will need to register a few details with us to be able to send your e-mail in.

    Thanks
    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Thank you for your reply, and I apologise for the late response I have been really busy,

I will send you an email and attach the complaint letter we are just about to send to your department which states all the details.

Its nothing personal but i called your complaints department and was fed a load of rubbish before being told to write instead.

    Cheers
    Jason

    Now that's customer service

I have always had good customer service and have always said that
    they have great product knowledge.

Well done to the Comet Rep.:T
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I purchase a fair few things from Comet with no probs so far. Pleased they came up trumps for OP - now, if they could just pull their finger out with the initial customer complaints it would be even better. OP shouldn't have been forced to get this dealt with by posting on here - hope they take that on board.

    I SPOKE TOO SOON!!

Instead of a cheque which was promised they sent me vouchers for comet! Now I spent my own money on the splashback, NOT comet vouchers. This is a joke, I have complained again and will continue to do so until I am compensated accordingly.
This is like a stab in the back especially after I praised Phil and trusted the situation was in hand

I'll keep you guys posted, thank you
