10 things you could do to become more green and ethical

  • Vegans - Can you imagine a countryside without animals?
Vegetarians - No animals = no dairy products. Being vegetarian doesn't work.

p.p.s. If animals weren't meant to be eaten, they wouldn't taste so good.

Is this deliberately meant to wind people up? methinks so.

I imagine most vegans would prefer a countryside without animals (farm animals anyway) to a countryside with millions of animals whose entire purpose in life is to be fattened up for someone's lunch.

Your anti-vegetarian argument makes no sense. Vegetarians are against the eating of animals, not their whole existence. In what way does being vegetarian 'not work', exactly?

Apparently human tastes good. Let's shrink the population that way - it would after all link in well with two of your arguments - smaller population (which i agree with), and that meat 'tastes good'.
  • I think that this thread has got away from the original topic - 10 ways in which you could be more green and ethical, and is solely focusing on veganism/vegetarianism, which if truth be told is a divisive debate as there are those who will never be converted and those who will never eat meat, etc. Think it's time I called it a day on this one as we seem to not be moving forward at all on this.
  • To get back to the original topic - don't buy cut flowers. It's energy intensive and flying them in from Africa, however fair trade they are, creates a shedload of CO2.

Grow your own. Much more energy efficient and enjoyable.

Oh how I agree with that one. :j I used to buy lots of cut flowers cos I like them in the house and I am not very good with houseplants:o When I reasoned about the plane fuel I had to stop. I am trying to grow some of my own but my fingers are less than green. If anyone can give me any suggestions of what will grow easily and be suitable for cutting I would be very grateful.

At the risk of being bombarded... I'll also mention that having babies is not exactly the greenest thing on this planet to do :D

  • Only because the Supermarket is screwing someone, somewhere - often, the supplier (especially in the UK). Did you know that the supermarket does not actually offer BOGOFs? Oh no .. they tell the supplier that they're going to do a BOGOF so that the supplier has to supply twice as much at the same price as a normal load  Hardly ethical.
    .

"Boo hoo" - poor farmers! They are subsidised and are sitting on land that makes them worth £1/2 million upwards. Most are worth at least a million.

If it wasn't for supermarkets forcing the price down they'd be ripping is off.

Oh please. Neither, in that case, is living but would you consider ceasing to to save the planet? I thought not.

Please remember that it's babies that will be keeping us alive in our twilight years, supporting our economy and paying our pensions. Despite the fact that they are not the greenest things on the planet, neither are you or I.

Oh, I thought we were talking about being green and ethical and doing our best to save the planet, NOT about the economy, or personal circumstances and whether you'll be ok in YOUR twilight years. Smacks of 'me me me' to me.

  • Here's an idea, a bit obvious but here goes. Peel your spuds with a peeler - not a knife. You remove less of the flesh, the vitamin C is just below the surface of the skin. More money in your pocket, and better for you.

Also, if you can't manage with a peeler and you must use a knife, clean your spuds first. Save the peelings and brush with a little olive/veg oil. Grill til golden and the kids will fight like crazy over them, how about a garlic/mayo dip too? You pay a fortune for this at restaurants.

Yes we are, but sensibly. That's not a sensible, practical nor realistic expectation to have.
