I'll certainly pass on the Happy Sim details to her, thanks Donnie.
Her visa is up to date, she left Thailand and went to Kuala Lumpur for a while, but I will remind her to do a visa run again if she decides to buy a oneway ticket home to extend her gap year holiday and not use her return ticket.I was wondering if we could apply to Thaiair for a refund on the taxes or fuel surcharges on the unused ticket.
And yes, mothers do worry and see danger in everything.

If she is still in KL, she can apply for a Tourist Visa whilst there. That would be less stressful than having to do visa runs.
Royal Thai Embassy
206 Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur
Tel: 03 248 8222, 248 8350, 248 8420, 245 8005
Fax: 03 248 6527
The Happy SIM is also International Roaming capable. She'll need to call 1678 at least 24 hours before she intends to use it for International Roaming.
It's automatically set up for normal national and international calls. So no need to do anything for that.
Generally, the shop assistant will install the SIM card on request.
If not, it's as simple as popping the SIM card in and dialling *1000 in order to select English.
If her mobile telephone is 'locked' to O2, she'll need to pop along to a mobile telephone shop to get it 'unlocked' at a cost of 200 to 300 baht.
Does no harm to the telephone. It just allows one to use any compatible network.0 -

Taxes and fuel surcharges make up around £100 of the price of the ticket.
So it's worth trying. I'm sure they won't make it easy to get a refund.0 -
Bangkok is the global capital for cheap flights. If she wants to extend her holiday, she can visit some local travel agents and organise her own flight, which will be MUCH cheaper than anything that could be bought in the UK. And yes, it is possible that a return ticket Bangkok-London-Bangkok could cost less than a one-way one, so advise her to find out prices for both kinds of ticket.
Be careful about the visa issue: if you do more than one visa run then Thai immigration get suspicious and this can cause major problems. She would do far better to visit the immigration office and regularise her status. Otherwise, if she is caught leaving the country after over-staying she will probably be fined, which would be a pain but not the end of the world.
For more details, do check the lonely plant website, above all the discussions about Thailand on the relevant section of thorntree.lonelyplanet.com (like that, no www)0 -

If you had taking the trouble to read the thread before posting, you would have noted that flights and prices from Bangkok have already been covered.
In addition, your statement "if you do more than one visa run then Thai immigration get suspicious and this can cause major problems." is just nonsense, as is this; "She would do far better to visit the immigration office and regularise her status."
Multiple visa runs are not a problem. The worst that can happen is that she can be asked to show she has ample funds to enter the country. 10,000 baht is the current figure.
As to your other point, you cannot 'regularise' your status. You either have a visa or a visa waiver stamp or you don't.
You cannot get a visa in-country, though you can extend one for 1900 baht at a domestic immigration office.
Your last statement has no connection with the first two, yet you write as though they are connected;
"Otherwise, if she is caught leaving the country after over-staying she will probably be fined, which would be a pain but not the end of the world."
First of all, if she is caught overstaying before she leaves the country, there is a good chance of her being detained and deported.
If she manages to get to a border immigration office without being stopped beforehand, there is a fine of 500 baht for each day of the overstay. No cash? Jail and deportation.
Your post is just misleading. Better if you didn't bother.
Here are the current rules;
30 day Visa exemption
These are issued to most nationalities upon entry to the Kingdom and can be extended once, for 10 days, by visiting your nearest immigration department before the expiry date. The fee for this is 1,900 baht. Overstay fines are 500 baht per day and can jeopardise your future applications. Every time you leave and re-enter Thailand at any border post, a new 30 day visa exemption is issued, no matter how short your exit stay is.
60 day Tourist visas
These are issued by Thailand Embassies abroad for a variable fee and can be collected on-the-spot. Once in the Kingdom you may renew this visa for a further 30 days at your nearest immigration department before the expiry date. The fee for this is 1,900 baht.
Visa runs
From September 2004 onwards the immigration officials have been asking to see proof of at least 10,000 baht for each 30 days you intend to stay, this would have to be in hard cash or shown in a Thai bank account book.0 -
Hello DonnieDonnie wrote:No, it won't work with the O2 SIM.
I would suggest that she removes the O2 SIM from the telephone and replaces it with a HAPPY SIM card from Thailand. It costs £3(199 baht) at any 7/11. This will reduce call and text message costs considerably. calls to the UK will be 10p per min. with the prefix I showed you earlier. Text messages, 7 pence each.
You could use one of the call through numbers to call her Thai number for 1 or 2 pence per minute. For text messages, I can give you access to an account which will allow you to send her up to 50 text messages per month for free.
I'm paying 10p from my pay as you go O2 mobile, and I get 10 free txts from their website.Do you think I can get 50 free somewhere.
Thanks for your help.

Just let me know when she is up and running with her Happy SIM and I'll give you access to 50 free msgs to the Thai mobile.
Otherwise buying an Easymobile SIM(by 23.07.06) for £2 and entering a friend's Easymobile number will give you £30 worth of credit. Enough for 600 text msgs to UK mobiles.0 -
Thanks for replying Donnie.
The mobile she has is playing up, it was an old one which I thought would be less desirable to a thief but its proved tobe unreliable. My fault.
