Hi Mike,
Just read your response to post from wantabetterlife.
I don't think you can get over the response you've had from people, it's as though you don't feel worthy of the attention.
The way I see it, there are so many people out there (myself included) that have had bad experiences with builders or tradesmen, we'll moan & complain about it, it can leave us out of pocket or in a mess and often means paying out a second time to get things put right. Anyone that has had a bad experience would love to see those responsible pay for what they've done. That said, how many of us get to do anything about it.
Maybe it's just me, maybe I was too lazy to look into ways to complain. I have told one to stop what he was doing because he'd made a right pigs ear of things. Job half done (and would need undoing & redone) so I told him I was only prepared to pay part of the agreed fee. Although it grieves me to say, he wanted more than the offer and threatened to take ME to the small claims court. I don't know the law for such circumstances but the thought of being taken to court freaked me out so I caved and handed over the money!!
Hindsight...I should have said I'm not paying you a penny & be happy to let a small claims court decide a fair amount!!!
This wasn't a one off, I could give you a long list of jobs done badly that I paid for & never officially complained about but you'd choke on your evaporated milk!
Your circumstances have been extreme and had a massive impact on health, finances & living conditions. Despite everything, you've fought harder than anyone I've ever known to make a builder take responsibility for the chaos he's caused. I know you've had to, you had little choice but MOST would have folded by now..I'd have been banging of the doors of the nearest mental institution and begging them to take me in!
It's a legal minefield, who else would enter into it without knowledge of the system, who else could afford a solicitor to do it all for them after taking such a financial hit.
Re-read your thread and look at what you have done and see what we see.
Remarkable!
