Surely it would be better for the staff in supermarkets to operate some form of common sense...

The guidlines are in place because discretion can lead to error. To avoid this things like "think 25" are in place. Your idea of common sense might not be water tight when it comes to running a business. It's a matter of perception. As is judging someones age.

My 17 year old son works part time at the Co-Op and if he sells cigs or booze to an underage it isn't the Co-Op who gets into trouble, it's him. I'd rather he turned 20 people away wrongly than get done for selling something to an underage person.

    He's not a jobsworth, just a kid.

This is the argument. For the business owners it's very bad press to sell alcohol to anyone underage. Yeah it's going to vary who think who is whatever age but as I said it's a matter of perception. You'll just see it from your point of view and not the wider picture.

What 'they' don't realise is all this does is make alcohol EVEN MORE attractive to the kids of the future.

Personally, I've never had chicken tonight, and never will - but I will defend the rights of anyone who wants to purchase it without having to identify themselves!!!

Fear not, they can always order it online without the worry of being ID'ed. Bit of a knock-up price though. But, maybe it's worth it to avoid having to carry your driving license to buy it. :rotfl:

    I look over 18, I look over 25, I look over 30.
I had many forms of valid ID that are more acceptable than a Citizen Card.
I was buying a cooking sauce.

My idea of common sense is that when someone presents the above you should sell it to them, there is no legal come back from the Chicken Tonight sales because it's not illegal to sell Chicken Tonight to someone who is 30!

This is absolute rubbish.. shouldn't have happened. Definitely wouldn't have happened in my co-op. What co-op was this in?

The one near South Ealing station.

I have written complaints and also asked for the CCTV (mainly for comedy reasons)..

The sale of all products containing alcohol will be restricted by all main retailers. The even includes as I've said chocolates. The staff won't want to get into trouble. This sort of thing is also checked by mystery shoppers. The staff are going to want to protect themselves and their jobs.

As I said judging age is a matter of perception. Your view of how old you look is unique to you, someone else might think something completely different.

Then someone else would be wrong. I look old. I had valid ID and I was buying sauce...

I am willing to bet that Chicken Sauce isn't flagged on their system, I have managed to buy it from self service tills without needing the minion to verify my age.

Maybe if you work in retail you can check in your shop.

It is common sense, but that also applies to the "customer", you know ( or should know) that any age restricted product will be id checked.Yes you have your id , how different froms of id do you want cashiers to remember, they are told to remember and accept -Passport, photo DL,Portman, Citizen.Anything else would be at the store managers / duty manager discretion not the cashier , and no you should not have been id`d for a cook in sauce, but the store could have been subject to a failure by trading standards/ police and were being over careful, its is very easy to to make the comments but believe me if you fail as a store any test purchase youn become very cautious /over killed about id and product sales.

A self service machine in ASDA told me I needed approval before continuing when I bought a £1 Wine Stopper. I pointed out to her that it contained no wine and she gave in and approved it. :o

Give me a break; yes if you are 18 or 19 but over 30!!!

And cooking sauce is not a restricted product.
