That being he was asked for ID for a NON ALCOHOLIC product, on top of having relevant ID and being of obvious (over 21) years of age, feel free to dance around this fact with your irrelevant and pointless spiel.

But they didn't have relevant ID, they had ID. As their ID wasn't and isn't on any list of acceptable ID by any council in the UK it wasn't relevant it was just ID.

Personally I think from reading the whole thread that either there was something else on the bill that was age restricted, or more likely the cashier just asked the question as they saw the word wine on the product.

Nope after posting his complete shopping list NOTHING on it was age restricted.

More likely the cashier saw the word "wine"as in "wine gum's" or in this case "Chicken in White Wine Sauce" and refused to sell the product to a mid 30s adult with plenty of authentic, photographic, age proving ID, as a result of completely disregarding the fact it was not an "age restricted" product that common sense would have pointed out.

Its just as well he was not buying a Wine Rack,a Wine Cooler or a Wine table - which may have completely thrown the cashier into a whole soup of confusion.

Marleyboy - I totally agree about the fact that he didn't need ID as it was a cooking sauce but if it had been alcohol none of the ID he showed was valid for the purpose. Would a random person know what any of his IDs looked like, no. That is why the list is very short, passport, driving license or PASS logo ID.

This thread is not about ID for alcohol.

"Co-OP and the tale of age verification"

Not sure this title mentions ANYTHING about ID for Alcohol.

No it would have been a till prompt. At the rate you have to scan things you aren't going to read the title of every single item being sold. Just think, when you are served in a shop when scanning an item does the cashier pick it up and read the title? no, they just scan it and move onto the next unless prompted by the till. Any "the computer says no" person as you say wouldn't have even looked at it!

I agree with you, on such things as buying alcoholic beverages, however as this was not alcohol related, its not relevant to the purchase.

At 40 years old I can safely buy alcohol without being ID'd however I do have my driving license on me (solely for the purpose of driving should I be asked for ID.

I cannot speak for the gentleman in question, but a 33 year old policeman with more than just his official ID on him, should have no problem in his ability to prove his age. But I imagine if he was buying alcohol, he could easily carry the required ID to purchase it.

Not everyone has a passport, or indeed a driving license, its those I particularly feel sorry for when confronted by a local shopping trip, having to be extra careful not to pick up anything that might have an alcohol related word on the package, from a Whisky glass to a Sherry Trifle, no matter how many wrinkles and grey hairs they may or may not have. ;)
