Teens are getting taller

  • I wish someone would tell that to my daughters then! Hubby and I are both only 5.5' so they were never going to be that tall, but DD1 age 16 is still only 5.3' and DD2 age 12 is still only diddy, probably not even 5' yet! They blame their dad......

Minty this is partly my point - my DS feels small at 5 ft 10! , my DD 12 is also not 5 ft and will be about 5 ft 3 or 5ft 4. This is what makes it worse that other kids seem to be very tall and it means that people who would have been above average height in my generation (my generation being those in early 40's) eg 5 ft 10 feel small! I am 5 ft 2 and it has bothered me and is doing again, but in late teens early twenties, I revelled in it!

I am telling my DD enjoy - make the most of being wee - you can be coy and not look silly, but then you can also be bal*sy and confident - so use what you need and being small as a woman can give you an extra weapon in your armoury. It isn't the same for DS though he doesn't do coy well!!!

Generally children end up taller than their parents, there is a calculation you can do to estimate a childs height, it is in the back of the red child health book.
So if you get two fairly tall parents they will have a tall child.
Can you imagine how tall people will be in 200 yrs!!!

That calculation I believe has a + or - error of 81/2 cm in my book - so they are estimating heights to 6 inches- not much of an estimate of adult height!! The twice height at 2 and 18 months is more accurate, IMO!

As for children being taller than their parents my mum was 5 ft 7 and I am 5 ft 2! that didn't work did it and my son will probably not be taller than DH at 6 ft! We must have some small genes affecting the result somewhere.

Have heard that boys will always be taller than their mum, but height genes are not sex linked, so can imagine a scenario where this wouldn't happen.
  • I'm 5'7 (and the tallest out of my siblings) with size 7 feet.
DH is 5'7" and size 7 feet
DS1 is 16 years old 5'11" with size 9 feet
DS2 is 14 years old 5'10" with size 8 feet (but still growing in height and feet)
poor DD is 19 years old and 5'2" with size 4 feet (she hates being so small)
Most of DH side of the family are short (5' to 5'8" in height)
Most of my family are short too with only my father being 6' so i must have got his genes for height and passed them onto my boys.

    I'm 19 and 5ft 7. I also look quite... youthful!

I work in a secondary school and you'd not believe how many times I'm mistaken for a pupil. :D

Isn't each generation supposed to gain an average 1 inch ? My Mum was about 5 foot 4, but used to think of herself as quite tall. She used to say I was short, even though I was the same height as her.
I have the opposite problem to some posters re childrens clothes. Everything I buy for my 2 youngest comes up miles too long although they are average height. My DD ,10 next month is only just now fitting into some of her age 7-8 clothes.

There is a really mixed bag of genes in our families on both sides, with relatives ranging from 4 ft 10 to over 6 foot.

I do think generally the younger generation have got taller. When I was at school I was average height at 5 ft 2 now I am short compared to other people.

I think you will find it is your height which has meant your children aren't very tall. If you were as tall as your DH then your children would have been taller.

Actually it could just as easily have come from OH's side as his Mum is only about 4 ft 10. My grandfather was 6 ft and I did inherit some characteristics from him but his height obviously wasn't one of them.:) I am shorter than my mum so the trend didn't work in my case, in fact of her daughters, I think only one of the five of us is taller than our Mum. Mum is at least two inches taller than me possibly more.

    Yep, they're way tall!

I used to be considered 'tall for a bird' to quote a friend's now ex-bf. I'm 5ft 6ins and now feel short.

My family is a pretty short family.

    My Mum is about 5'
My Dad is about 5' 7"

My sister is 25 and she is about 5' 1"
    I am 23 and 5' 2"
My younger sister is 14 next week and she is already 5' 4"

So whilst my older sister and myself are around the same height with a 2 year gap, my younger sister is already freakishly tall for our family!

My husband is about 5' 9'' - i'm 5ft 6''. My 2 youngest sons are about 6' 2''. My eldest son is only 5' 9'' and he looks tiny compared to his 'little' brothers. :D It looks like my 14yo daughter is going to pass by her big brother too.

My granda was over 6ft tall. I always thought he was huge. My brother is also over 6ft tall and my dad is 5'9''. I think my boys and brother are throwbacks. :D

I work in both primary and secondary schools. In primary schools I'm involved in weighing the R and Y6 children, and yes, they're getting taller. In secondary school they TOWER over me walking through the corridors. I'm only 4 ft 10 and a bit so I get lost in the crowds!
