Upgrading phone with O2, please advise.
Options
Hello everyone,
I am on a contract with O2, paying £20 a month for 300 offpeak minutes and 500 text messages, my phone is a Samsung D500, have had it for more than a year now, and an upgrade is due subject to another 12 months contract.
I "fancy" the new SonyEricsson K800i, so I've called the usually unhelpful customer services and asked for one, was told that i'd have to pay £179 for it, so I did the usual thing and told them I wanted to leave, so the girl transferred me to the cancellation dept.
They asked me the reason why i want to leave and told them that another provider were prepared to match my current tariff but they'd give me the phone for free! (a big lie but I had to try!!!). So the lady offered me the phone for £79 plus, after a bit of haggling, a 20% discount on my monthly tariff which would reduce it to £16, i'll save £48 over 12 months but still have to pay £79 upfront for the new phone, net payment to them: £31.
What is your opinion, good deal or should I shop around for a better one?
thanks for reading this, have a good day

Think you could probably do slightly better - 3 are giving this phone away for free - if you find this deal and quote it to the cancellation dept im sure they will come down slightly more - I recently upgraded with o2 to a SonyEricsson w810i with 500mins (xnet anytime) and 100 texts for £17.50 per month with the free phone.0

When I upgraded I just told them I'd been to the link and they'd offered me the tariff I wanted and that they'd give me the phone for free and £50 cash back so could I have my PAC code please so I could take my number with me.
They matched the tariff for and gave me the phone for free.
I had been to the link and they'd offered me the tariff I wanted for £35 a month, I told o2 the link had offered it for £30 so o2 offered it for £25. So i get 500 xnet mins and 600texts for £25
Just go on-line and find a deal with the phone free and tell them you're leaving for that. And if they don't agree then leave, at the end of the day you're here to save money and they'd give it to a new customer for free, so why not you?
Unfortunately for me I've had nothing but grief since upgrading (messed up bills and such. It took them two months to actually put me on the correct tariff) so I wish I had of left and am currently trying to cancel my contract. I do seem to be in the minority having trouble with o2 though.
Good luck.Sigless0 -
Im having a useless time with them as well, Tried to upgrade today, as contract expired. Asked about the N80, which they were offering to new customers on £19/month for just £99. The price they offered me for an upgrade is £249 even if i changed to the £25 a month tarrif!
Like im going to take that, not exactly customer loyality.
The only offer they had for me is stay on exactly the same tarrif as im on now (only £19 a month), sign for another 12 months and get £100 credit on my bill.
I stupidly accepted this but im guessing as its a new contract i have 14 days before in tied in to it. Id most likely save just dropping back down to their online pay as you go than accepting this.
Anyone got any reccomendations?0 -

I really do this it's ridiculous that they'll give new customers brand new phones for nothing but make loyal customers pay through the nose for them.
If I were you I'd call them back and tell them I'm leaving (don't mention you'll go to their pay and go, they'll see it as still gettig money from you, so they have no reason to try and keep you) as you can get the phone for free/cheaper from elswhere (just look around what websites are offering it cheaply and quote that).
I'm sure you get 14 days to change your mind.Sigless0 -
I have 2 contracts with o2 which ive renewed this month. We did have £30 per month tariff for 200 minutes and 100 texts with a D500 phone.
I phoned up to cancel and they put me through and on 1 account (partners who wanted E900) i was offered the E900 for free, they gave me 100 xnet anytime minutes (enough for him) and 300 texts and all for £10 per month. So took this offer.
I wanted the N80 and they said it would be £149 so i left it and took an E900. When delivered it was faulty so sent it back. I didnt ask for a replacement as i didnt really like it. Rang back and asked about the N80 and was told £149 still but did get offered it for £129 from o2 shop. Anyway, to get to the point, i rang them this Friday just gone and am now awaiting a nice new N80 for the much lower price of £79. They have also renewed my contract at 100 minutes and 300 texts and lowered it to just £10 per month. So im very happy.
I think you just have to keep trying your luck and see what you get offered when you ring. I tried all sorts to start with and told them online anyone can get it for £99, cant they match that price. I also said someone i knew had been offered it for £49 (a thread on here) but in the end when i rang Friday i said about having an E900 as i really wanted the N80 but they wanted too much money when i asked before. I told her they had quoted £149 and £129 but i knew someone had it for £49 and she said i know its not £49 i will see what its coming up as. She then said £79 so i took it.
What i do wonder though is how can i be sure thats what i will get it for? Will there be an invoice in the parcel for that amount? I would hate to go over the 14 approval period then get the bill in for £149 or so!!0 -
RESULT!
just rang retentions direct, still couldnt offer new handset but im happy with my existing handset anyway.
200 minutes, 500 texts, £100 credit on bill. £15 a month.
So basically i will pay £15 a month for 5 months and that is it.
12 month resign, better than my previous offer of just the £100 credit.
First she offered £5 a month off the bill as well as the credit for 50mins 500 text, then i moaned a bit more about how new customers get everything and she changed it to £15 a month for 200 minutes 500 text + £100 credit. Before this i never spent more than £19 a month for 50 minutes, 500 texts, surprised when they offered this.
Might have been able to get more but im only a "tier A" so i wasnt going to push it.0 -
Well, after a month and a half I called them back and managed to negotiate a 50% discount on my current tariff (online offpeak300), taking it down to £10 a month for 12 months. I still have to pay £79 for the SonyEricsson K800i, but I would hopefully get at least £50 for my D500 on Ebay.
Not too bad I think, I could have haggled more, and threatened to leave again but I just can't be bothered anymore, don't want to be too greedy ;o)0 -

Do you just said you had N80 for £79 on a £10 per month 12 month contract?
that sounds like a jolly good deal.0 -

I'm after something very similar to this. Currently got a Nokia 6230i on o2 Online50 (500texts and 50 anytime/network mins), and want to cut my monthly bill since i start uni later this month. Would like a d900 (for free obviously) and more mins and texts. A friend of mine has 100mins and 750texts for £15 a month but i wasn't offered anything close to this! Contract runs out in about 2 days. Spent ages on the phone to customer services but didn't get anywhere. Any ideas? Would it be cheaper to visit my o2 shop?
Thanks for any help and advice0 -
You wont get anywhere with customer service.Did you say you were planning to leave? When you get passed to disconnections that is when you start the haggling. I got nowhere with customer services either.0
