Well, from what i read, you have failed to get into third year, so you have failed. The "idiots" that tactically revise are in third year.

I presume multiple choice exams are objective not subjective, either you were right or wrong, so a computer can mark it.

Doing essays and course work tend to be a lot easier than final exams. Certainly from my experience this is the case, and a lot of people depend on course work to pull up their final mark. Unseen exams properly test your knowledge, essays etc. don't always tend to be as hard because you can consult books etc. to fill gaps in your knowledge.
I always came top of the tutorial assignments, and the "idiots" I refer to are the ones who thought that a Nitrogen atom was larger than a tryptophan residue  But hey that's what you need to be a third year biochemist these days :rotfl: Good luck British Industry ;)

Get in touch with the Uni again regarding the multiple choice paper.

I was with the OU and had to fill in a 'lottery type form' for my multiple choice answers and filled it in wrong. I had written the answers down then copied them onto my sheet ... only I started marking my answers at question 2 and not 1 and so got a terrible score. Fortunately for me, it wasn't a final exam or anything so I was able to laugh it off and learn by my mistake (I still got something like 20% though, lol).

Did you make a copy of the answers you had and have you double checked with others in your study group. A simple error may have caused you to fail ... It's worth checking up on and even if you have to resit becasue of it, at least you'll know that you 'knew' the answers.

Good Luck and don't give up. I know another year seems a long time but really it's not ... YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!
Thanks :T I did actually double check the multiple choices during the exam but can't double check with anyone else obviously because it was an exam and we weren't allowed to take anything out of the exam hall.

I've already had some strong words from one of the secretaries who seems to think that they are totally infallible. I was so confident with the exams but I have to face the fact that they've made up their minds. I've got to resit these like it or not. :o It's life...

I can really sympathise with you- Ive just graduated at Notts Uni doing Biochemistry and my second year was really tough- The workload and the standards that they expect doubles from the first year. I found you only get the high marks if you do the extra reading- Look up the papers the lecturers site in lectures. They want evidence you've done the extra work. Also I found the teaching not as good in the Biochemistry department, whereas I found the teaching much better in Genetics. Maybe thats something to think about when choosing your modules next year. Choose the modules where you know the lecturers mark generously.

On the bright side, You'll have all the information fresh in your mind for the final year, which is always good! and the third year is weighted more so if you're going to resit, its a good thing its now and not next year! ;)

If you ever need to chat to a fellow Biochemist, feel free to pm/email me :)

    Good Luck!

Yep it's the same where I am - genetics is so much better than biochemistry but as for my modules next year - I have no flexibility with modules at all as I have 100 credits and just 20 Genetics :rotfl: Bring it on!! I'm revising for the resits atm and yes I'm aware of which lecturers mark leniently but if I wanted to bump my marks I'd have done the zoology modules where everyone gets over 70 :p (no offence to zoologists :o) unfortunately I can't do those in my final year :(

    Hi spaceage,

Sorry to hear about how results went - I've just graduated this summer but the awful feeling of exams and results etc are still fresh! I know it can get you down but really, take heart from what everyone is saying and remember that you've done well to get this far - degrees aren't for the faint-hearted! :o

I would say go for the resits - I know they're a pain but it could really be worthwhile. I'm not sure what the system is at your university, but at mine any mark in a module under 40% leads to you losing your Honours status, which would be shame.

You mentioned that the topics you revised didn't come up - It is really, *really* hard to revise every single topic I know (I definitely revised a few topics in depth and skimmed the rest!), but it is just bad luck. Rubbish I know, but that's all it is.

I know a lot of your coursemates didnt' make it, but I've found that that is the case with science subjects often - the courses are difficult, there is an immense amount to learn and they expect a lot from you - but that is just teh nature of uni-science courses (says the Social Sciences student!). You sound like an intelligent, rational bloke and I know it's rubbish when you feel let down or regret things, but I think the best thing you can do it really push for these resits - remember, you can do it and you live and you learn! :o Best of luck spaceage!

Another Newbie! :hello: Welcome to MSE and congratulations on your graduation!! :T :D

Nope - my uni is much more, shall we say, "relaxed" - in fact, if 'someone' fails 120 out of the 360 credits needed for the BSc Hons then they'd still get the Hons degree (provided their average is over 40!) albeit a 3rd class hons at best. Silly I know

I'm in the midst of revision at the moment (just taking a break!) and I'm definitely feeling better as it's the second time I'm revising this stuff so it's sticking much better. There's also the extra determination to prove to the 'academics' that I really can do it which keeps me going. :)

A totally OT question: does anyone find the word "prostaglandin" funny? I was :rotfl: on the floor earlier... I never found it funny till 20 mins ago

I'd speak to someone from your students union.

They will be in the best position to tell you what you can and can't do, what would most likely work and what wouldn't.

Also they are in very nearly all cases independant from the university (although at some universities like my old one its quite hard to tell...)

    good luck
