Aerial Booster to improve LCD Freeview TV

Freeview channels/picture breaking up with new LCD Freeview TV downstairs – this even happened with previous old analogue TV connected to digibox.

But good freeview channels/picture when moved the same digibox upstairs for old analogue portable TV.

If I buy Argos Philex 4 way booster £16.99 and connect it to new TV downstairs will that solve problem? I assume have connect booster direct to TV & aerial - not something in loft......?

(What about 1 way booster £11.99? or 2 way booster £10.97?)

Thanks in advance

  • It is impossible to say if it will solve the problem or not. By all means give it a go, as Argos do offer a money back guarantee.

That said, my gut instincts are always to recommend having a decent aerial installed: there is no such thing as a digital aerial, but a professionally-fitted aerial is the proper solution.

    See the CAI website.

1, 2, 4 way, boosters mean you will have that amount of outlets, for the down stairs TV you will just need 1way, plug the aerial lead into the booster then a cable from the booster to the TV.

If the signal is good upstairs and poor downstairs and you only have one aerial on the property, then, check the connectors downstairs for any sign of corrosion or "shorting" of the outer braid and inner core.

If the lead goes up the outside wall check the condition of that, (from the ground!)

    .

I agree, there really is no substitute for a properly installed external aerial.:)
  • OP,

If you have a good picture when connected upstairs then it seems your aerial is good enough, please do not go to the expense of a new installation before checking the cabling and connections.
  • Hi, thanks for all the info. I think I will risk the purchase of the 2 way booster. The fact that the portable TV (uptstairs) connected to a digibox, has a good clear picture ....makes me think that the aerial is probably Ok.

Didn't really understand the tech info in last post... are they saying I need a shorter cable from TV to aerial socket in wall? current cable is approx 2 meters.
  • Now, I am confused. You have used the term 'digibox' twice: for me, a digibox is a ($ky) digital satellite receiver.

Would you confirm that the equipment you are using is digital terrestrial?

  • sorry! by digibox I meant wharfdale digital terrestrial receiver (freeview box)

When the above was connected to old analogue tv downstairs - TV picture breaking up for freeview channels - so bought a new LCD Freeview TV - thinking it would solve problem - but the same problem....

Bu when moved the freeview box to old portable analogue TV upstairs - good clear freeview channels.....
  • Ok, you need to explain what aerial(s) you have.

  • It is just an old aerial - not digital - must be at least 10/15 years old
