The only way to eliminate the final value fee is is you do a mutual not to proceed with sale (so ebay refund it to your account) and then privately still go ahead. You have to trust buyer to agree though. Or if they do it before had they may try and haggle the price down more after.

The last couple of times i sold cash on collection the buyers never had quite enough money on them. Never more than paypal fees would have cost and never enough for me to be to offended but its off for buyers to do that. As a buyer i always had the money exactly right or rounded up never down in an evelope ready to hand over.

i have used cash on collection lots and no probs............never accept paypal and allow the item to be collected as its against paypals policy ...the buyer can do a chargeback and you wont have any proof of trackable posting, without that your buyer will get a refund from paypal ........cash on collection simply end the listing and save yourself some ebay fees.

How do you stop people from paying by paypal prior to collection?

Well you can't stop them but you can refund.
To just reiterate for this thread,

You can accept cash on collection and complete via Ebay. If a buyer wants to collect you should not accept Paypal, but you must still offer to accept Paypal on Ebay, Your choices are cash on collection or Paypal and ship.

Completing off Ebay having used Ebay's services via the listing will save on fees but is imo unethical and if a seller/buyer reports you for offering/asking for it you risk your Ebay account.

I've been selling some furniture and its all been collection only. Most people are quite happy to pay cash on collection but i've had some pay by paypal immediately the auction ends.

You can always try offering a small discount if they accept a paypal refund and bring cash instead, but you can't force the issue.

I am in the situation of trying to sell an item i expect to to sell for approx £1500, but it weighs 90kg so would prefer collection as the cost to send would, i assume, be quite high, so ripe for scammers to claim item not recieved if paid through paypal, so how would it be best to word a cash on collection sale, or if somebody has a rough idea of how much it would cost to send by courier i would be grateful, first time selling an item so heavy, or valuable so trying to avoid any pitfalls, thanks.

90kg is very heavy and none of the cheap carrier services will take it, this will be considered as freight. Probably best to strap it to a pallet so the carrier can use their handling equipment. It will not be cheap and probably more if your buyer turns out to be in Northern Ireland or the Highlands. You also need to be sure that it is adequately insured.

Another option is to post on Shiply
    http://www.shiply.com/
but this can only be done when you know where it is to go.

Someone will be along soon to suggest some companies to take this.

Don't forget though that you still have the problem that they may pay by paypal and won't have any tracking.
