    Well Done MJMum!

It proves that good old nagging can work.

Had an email from my landlady saying "will reply to you soon."

I'm hoping all the stuff in the press about deposits might help her decide ;)

Seems we both have similar tastes!

Well still no news guys from ARLA, wondering whether to call them this coming week. Also probably should call the local rag and let them know the court date is 31st May...

  • Hi EagerLearner,
It might be hard work keeping up you enthusiasm for two and a half months?
On behalf of all the other tenants you must have inspired to seek justice in the last several months, I thought I'd add a few thoughts about the new deposit scheme.
Shelter was given a few minutes to explain things on Radio 5 Live (at about 05:45 hrs !) this week, but I ended up more confused than before.
Fortunately Radio 4 Moneybox has come to the rescue, with a more detailed item repeated tonight at 21:00 or listen again at:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/moneybox/6434177.stm

(The listenagain lasts only for a week, but after that you can read a transcript of the program)

I'm a bit concerned that the landlords are likely to opt for the "Insurance" option, and tenants might find getting the "right" amount of money back, still a real hassle. I think the original idea for deposit protection came from Australia but our government has managed to make it a complex potential mess. Perhaps someone from Sydney can tell us how it works on the ground down-under ?

The Swiss have a scheme, based on the theory that all flats have to be kept immaculate, by both landlord and tenant; swiss tenants don't get their deposits back if the screw holes have been filled with toothpaste, when the inspector calls. I think I can see two lines of UK government thinking at work:
the deposit schemes will be another source for checking, to trace landlords who have omitted rental income from their tax return and also a self policing list of rental properties that will in future be forced to adopt higher environmental standards (Global warming - Carbon footprints etc. ?1?)

    TTFN

    John.

Hi EL, I've just spent much of my Sunday (in a slightly hungover state) reading this thread. I can't believe it's dragging on until May to find out if you will get your deposit back (if indeed she pays up then).

I've just been in a similar situation, and after ten weeks, I eventually got all the money back. I had to threaten court action, however.

Good luck with your court case - keep us posted with the developments!

Thanks Melissa - your support is much appreciated! Yeah end of May is so far away... It's Mr EL's birthday on 27th April and last year she managed to spoil it (it as then she said we could sign the renewal, but then within a few hours changed her mind and said she had given it to private tenant, after we'd been forced to leave b&b that I had booked especially for him). So at least this time we get to celebrate first and then face her!
