Oooh, no. Costco cakes are awful. All style and no substance. As the OP said, too much icing, and the cake itself (when you get to it) is just bland and disappointing. Their apple pies are the same - look amazing, but the apple is tasteless.

Had a piece of Sainsburys chocolate tray bake today and it was really lovely, everyone thought it was great. Not the most attractive as it is a tray bake in a foil tin with chocolate shavings and little maltesers on top, but the sponge was gorgeous.
I had the yellow one from Tesco's for my birthday last week and I really loved it :D

These sheet cakes seem to be made by the same bakery, as the decorations are almost identical, so depending if you feel like chocolate or vanilla, I'd say either one from either store is a safe bet ;)

Avoid the asda chocolate tray bakes as they are too sweet. Also the tatty teddy cake from Tesco was not good. I do like the photo cake from Tesco. The cakes in Waitrose are nice too....though a bit pricey for the size.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought this, the Costco cakes are very popular but we weren't overly impressed. Some of their other cakes ie carrot cake etc are yummy

I've had M&S ones that were not so good aswell in the past and it's put me off, their cupcakes were also terrible I thought

We did get a Star Wars cake from Tesco's however would not do this again, not very nice at all to be honest - you are paying for the brand

I had one of these for my birthday last year, was very excited about it as I love french fancies. It was a huge disappointment :( Dry, almost stale sponge, thin flaky dry icing and way too much sickly-sweet-yet-flavourless cream gloop. 2/3 of it went in the bin, it was that bad.

It's such a shame so many of them are not very good, I do love a birthday cake
