  • Sainsbury's photo cakes are nice, but i think you have to pre order them, if you haven't got time to pre-order Tesco photocake would be a close second imo.

Tesco's own jam/buttercream birthday cakes are my personal favourite :) Might have to try Costco though as I've never yet met a cake that I've found too sweet or had too much icing lol :D

My personal choice would be costco £13 for a huge cake iced and decorated with your own text. yummy!!!
however, as you've said it's not what you're looking for, my second choice would be a caterpillar cake or photo cake from asda or tesco, both nice, albeit small in comparisson.

Another vote for the photo cake. We've had them a couple of times from Tesco's and the cakes were really moist both times. The recipients really appreciated a personalised cake too.
  • Had a piece of Sainsburys chocolate tray bake today and it was really lovely, everyone thought it was great. Not the most attractive as it is a tray bake in a foil tin with chocolate shavings and little maltesers on top, but the sponge was gorgeous.

I always make my own Birthday Cakes and they are much much better than any shop bought ones (even if I do say so myself! :p lol)

Here is my tried and tested 100% foolproof recipe for a great tasting moist cake!

    225g (8oz) Self Raising Flour
    225g (8oz) Caster Sugar
    100g (4oz) Marg
    2 Med Eggs
    5 tbsp milk
    5tbsp water
few drops vanilla essence (if desired)

Heat oven to 180c (gas 4). Grease tin

    Mix flour and sugar
Rub in Marg (with your hands till it looks like breadcrumbs)
Beat Eggs with milk and water
Pur Egg mixture into dry ingredients and mix with a hand mixer (or by hand)

Place in tin and bake for approx 35 mins.

To check that cake is cooked, stick a clean knife into top of cake, if the knife comes out clean, then the cake is ready, if runny cake mixture is on the knife then cook for a few more mins.

This will be enough for two 8 inch tins.

    Zippy x

Thanks zippybungle, one day I'll try the recipe as my previous cakes have never turned out the best - they are a little on the dry side even though I bake them as instructed..

+1 for this. Really nice, good flavour, looks alright and goes far. Good bargain!
