Hi there, it is occupational therapists that do home assessments for discharges (which is my job lol!). Occupational health deal with employee health related matters. Easy to get the 2 names mixed up & happens all the time.

Not had chance to catch up with what has happened nixinixi, but if I can be of any help please just PM me. All areas work slightly differently. If your family member is in a specific rehab unit then they usually have physio and occupational therapy (OT) input. The OT will assess what is called activities of daily living - which is basically just how someone copes with all the day to day things they need to do eg. getting dressed, managing the toilet, what will happen with drink & meal preparation, getting around the home in general, getting on and off things etc. OT's usually work quite closely with social workers who's job it is to organise any extra help that might be needed at home. OT's can also provide equipment to make life easier depending on need (stuff to make it easier getting off the loo, out off bed, to carry food from A to B etc). If bigger stuff is needed social services OT staff are usually involved and this can be a lengthier process (for things like stairlifts etc), but as Elly mentioned sometimes you can get stuff from SAFFA or other charitable organisations. Home visits do not always happen before discharge - it depends on need. They are very helpful as a "trial run" to see what will be needed on discharge. It is very very important to make sure all help / equipment etc is in place PRIOR TO DISCHARGE and dig your heels in if they try to discharge and you have any worries or the plan is not in place.

Gone off on a major tangent sorry lol!!!!!

Thank you Bluecow, your offer is much appreciated! Will pm you later if that is ok, it is the getting all the support in place that is bothering me, at themoment everytime they say they will do something the next day they phone me with the phone number and say here is the number you do it......grrrr.
Munchki - YOU ... WILL ... NOT GIVE UP!! Your fellow Dribblers will not permit you to do so! All this chasing about must be so frustrating, but you are clearly capable and experienced, you're getting interviews.

So what ideas can we come up with for our Munchki? I'll start off with this - how about combining a part-time or temp job (however rubbish) with working on your business again? If you think it's a crap idea, I don't mind, just trying to get brains working on your behalf.

Nixi, we had a similar experience when my mum was out of hospital and needed some temporary support. SS didn't want to know, even though she lives alone, two of us live abroad, and the third is the other side of London, with school-age children. Family are supposed to deal with everything, even though it's not always practical or indeed possible.

They have known from day 1 that I really don't want/can't be involved (lot of history between me and dad) and back then it was all 'of course, we understand' and now it is all 'you need to do this' and then a call the next day to say 'have you done this yet?'. Driving me mad.

Munchki - I am soooo sorry. Honestly it is there loss that they aren't employing youm they obviously don't want someone full of ideas and energy. Like you I am not a 'yes person' and I know that can get me in all sorts of scrapes, but most employers only want 'yes people', the right employer is there somewhere.

Munchki did you see the links for the advertising car wraps yesterday? I thought of you.....it could pay for your car each month, up to £220, not ideal but a start. Actually seriously considering it for me to! Hugs hun xx

  • Munchki, you and Saucy are the worst for apologising when there is absolutely no need to! This is your home from home and you can vent whenever you need to. I know how frustrating and precarious your situation is, and I can't come up with any easy solutions or an instant job, much as I'd like to. As others have pointed out, the job market is at its toughest at the moment and it won't improve for a while yet. I know it won't be much comfort, but you have shown a lot of determination and that is a great asset. I've been at the point where I was almost broke and desperate, and then my current job came up. Yes, it's not ideal, but I'm grateful for it and it's paying my way. Try a bit of visualisation - you never know - see yourself being offered that job and think how good you'll feel sitting at your desk on your first day at work.

    Thanks Hales:-)

grrrrrrr stupid eBay buyer. Sold one of those bloody remote control cars and he emailed me saying the battery wouldn't fully charge. Thought fair enough so sent him a charger and battery that I'd tested free of charge. Now he's saying that's not charging either. He's really blunt as well which annoys me - email just said ... Hi, new battery doesn't charge...that was it!! Dunno what to do now, have emailed him back asking if he used the new charger and am waiting for the reply. I tested the car before sending so don't think it's a problem with that. I wish I'd never seen those stupid bloody cars :-(

  • Munchki, reading what Nixi says about you not being a 'yes' person makes me think that maybe you would do really well in a small business where you could really exercise your energies. Larger companies are more likely to want someone to fit a defined role and image, whereas a small company may be more flexible and allow you scope to do more.
