  • Thank you to everyone on this thread who has posted their experiences. Our Scala sofas (bought Nov 2006) have been peeling for a few months despite being well-loooked after, but the last straw was at the weekend when a whole massive area peeled off in the middle of one of the back cushions and my father in law said "that can't be leather". Inspired by you all I have rung Reading FV and they are sending someone out to look at it. He mentioned re-covering but I will only accept that if it's genuine leather. Otherwise from what others have said I guess it's a choice between the Dante and a refund. I have my 5 year Guardsman guarantee which states that the product is "Leather upholstery where a finish has been applied during manufacture". That seems pretty clear to me, so I am not going to take any messing around. Will be referring to all your complaints and taking nothing less than substantial refund or leather replacement.

Obviously these sofas are pretty cheap though so am tempted to go somewhere else if I do get a refund. Any suggestions of where you can get decent hard-wearing leather sofas which are reasonably priced?

We're replacing ours with Ikea sofa's, excellent quality, half the price.

I bought my Scala from Reading FV too and negotiated a straight swap with them for the Dante with no extra to pay, so don't accept anything less than an exchange or full refund.

I say "negotiated" as they did put up some resistance, the technician was keen on recovering and the store were insistent on the wear and tear penalty - but I got there in the end without too much fuss.

The Dante is pretty good for the money in my opinion, so much softer and warmer than the plastic Scala. Good luck!

interesting...first phone call got me through to someone who let something slip after I told him it was bought in November 2006 - 'ah yes sir, we changed them to real leather in 2008 in order to comply with the law in the UK'

    You did WHAT?

So instantly I knew there is something amiss here.

I was then told I needed to call the store I bought from, a polite and very pleasent lady found my order and then said we have two things we usually do with these sofa's...

We either visit to completely recover the sofa (really? given the cushions are sewn to the frame this must be a VERY complex job as the whole thing would need to be replaced...)
Or we offer a reselection process (which she quietly added would be subject to a wear and tear reduction fromt he purchase price) - e.g. they get rid of the problem and given the markup lose no money - I'd be happy to reselect, but only if its for the full amount (I would obviously spend on top)

We will see, the manager is on annual leave till Thursday, he's going to give me a call then to discuss - although given what I've heard today I would say the ball is very much in my court with this issue...

    I'll keep you posted
Hi there I am having same problems what was your outcome Thanks Ann
  • I purchased my suite in 2006. I received fantastic customer service and am still highly delighted with my replacement Dante suite two months on. It is more comfortable and a far superior quality to the Scala suite that I had purchased (and been happy with, until the leather started peeling). I am surprised that there have been various degrees of success when dealing with FV as from my experience they couldn't have been more helpful.

    Hope that this helps others

  • Hi Lisa I am having the same problems can you tell me what store you got the straight replacement from?
  • We have the same problem with our Scala sofas - they were bought in December 2005. Does anyone have a copy of a brochure from around then?

    Thanks

you don't need a copy of the brosure, have a full read through this thread and then call the store - mine was all done over the phone within 10 or so days IIRC.

This thread has all the info, including findin out who your store manager is.

I didn't get mine replaced, I managed to get a 50% refund and got to keep the sofas (for the time being they are ok to live with to be honest)
  • I had the manager from the store round last night to look at the peeling! He offered me 400.00 of new sofas, I said I needed to think about it but not happy with the offer. Not sure how to go about the next step as I want a full refund. Can any one advise?

How long have you had the sofas and how much did you pay?
