Do you get small gifts for your OH just because you can?

I was at a party last night, and chatting to a couple of girlfriends. We got onto the subject of money and presents, and started talking about guys buying their OHs gifts.

One friend said how her DH never buys her presents, he'll never do anything like even pick her up a chocolate bar when he's out just because he can. I was quite pleased to say that my OH does, he'll always pick me up a favourite choccy bar, or a bottle of my favourite caffeine booster LOL, because he knows I'll like it.

We then unanimously agreed that were our OHs to bring us back a present, it wouldn't matter what it was, or that they'd only spent a few pennies on, say, the choccy bar, it's the fact that they were out, without us, and got something because they thought of us.

So I was wondering, what are everyone's OHs like? Does yours pick you up small prezzies, unprompted, just because he/she can? Or do they not ever bother? My girlfriends seem to think that blokes tend to just not think about stuff like that, but I disagree, my OH is really quite thoughtful like that. Or do you get your OH little gifts just because you can, or does it just not cross your mind?

Yes, I like to buy him little treats occasionally (especially as a small reward if he's done something that was a struggle, like DIY)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Hi Jo_R,

Yes, and it's lovely. :) I used to (in my pre-MSE days) buy him the DVDs I saw that he would like whenever I did the weekly shop but since money has become tighter, I do try not to buy things like that anymore but I will sometimes buy him a Cream Egg or something similar, just to show that I was thinking of him and to make him smile.

Likewise, he will sometimes call into the shop when he's been out somewhere and get me a bar of choccy or sometimes even flowers just for no reason and it's so nice to get something on just a normal day, not even an occasion. If he's been out for the day at a show somewhere he'll always look around for something suitable to get me if I've not been with him or alternatively he'll call at the service station on the way home to get me one of the overpriced cuddly toys they always have there that he knows I love LOL. :D

Maybe your friend needs to drop a few hints if it's something that really bothers her (i.e. if she does it for him and it's not reciprocated) as it could just be that he hasn't thought of the idea and would be quite happy to do it should the idea fall into his head. ;)

I get my OH little gifts all the time.

Only last month I bought her an xbox360 with Halo.
And when we are getting food I always make sure I buy her a portion of whatever I have that I know she will bloody pick at, till I don't get enough. :rotfl:

    Caring sharing modern man me.

  • I buy my OH little things when I'm out and about without him. In fact he does the same for me, though not quite as often but thats simply because it is me that is normally out and about doing the shopping to have more chance to do it. When he does bring me something home it is so nice, as you said to know he was thinking of me to do that. I think it is the small thoughtful gestures that mean much more on a regular basis, than the infrequent big romantic gestures :D

Mine doesn't. He phoned me from his work just after Christmas to say he'd got me a present. He'd won a raffle. It was an ipod touch. When he came home I didn't even get to look at it as he'd decided to keep it for himself. I didn't want one but he didn't need to say he'd got me a present!

I don't usually get birthday or Christmas presents from him either. I did get flowers from him last year on my birthday though (doesn't happen a lot). Didn't get anything for Christmas though. It's my birthday next week and i've ordered myself a Kenwood Chef as a birthday present to myself. I don't really mind not getting anything. Then I don't feel guilty if I buy myself anything. ;)

I buy him fags without him asking. Does that count? :o And if a new book comes out that I think he'll like the look of, then i'll get him that. He's not into sweeties. He buys himself enough boys toys anyhow!
  • my oh quite often buys me wee gifts usually just a cream egg etc bt always something he knows i will like, at xmas i got my usual gifts and then he brought out a wii for me as i had mentioned i was going to save to buy one

  • I find that most guys seem to only think - a little - of buying things when it's a birthday, christmas etc. They don't seem to think about the little things, some say that's how guys are - i don't believe that. It's not even about the cost as you have all said, it's just that they were thinking of you to get it, to make the little extra effort to do things.

To me it's the little things that matter the most in a relationship. When i'm with someone i'm always thinking about how i can make them feel happy and buying or making them little things. Some guys i've been out with it's been wasted on, others it hasn't.

My OH does most of the shopping as I hate doing it, so yes he does sometimes buy me little pressies, like a bar of chocolate, bottle of wine, a cd or some flowers, hes also a real bargain hunter and will bring me home something from the sales, the other week he got me a calendar he knew I would like as it was nice n cheap :). On the rare occaisons that I go to the shops, hes usually with me, so I dont get the chance to buy him anything, if I ask if theres anything he wants or suggest me buying a cd or dvd which hes looking at, he says no, which is infutiating, he says hes not bothered. I had to call into the shop where our daughter works yesterday to give her the house key as we were going out with the dogs and she was due to finish work, so I took the opportunity to buy him a box of choccies, its not often I get the chance to do this, I must get out more :rotfl:I do feel bad that he doesnt get much from me in the way of material gifts, but hes got me, what more could he ask for :rotfl:
