    Hi Silvaflora,

This may sound like a silly question but what does she want the iphone for? Is it the apps or for the actual phone? My 13 yr old son was desparate for an iphone, but it isn't an option for him due to cost, however he saved up enough to get himself an ipod touch, which is very similar to the iphone, but doesn't actually have the phone bit.

He is very pleased with it, he acesses the internet through wi-fi and uses loads of apps.

He has a cheap basic phone that he uses when he needs a mobile but the ipod touch meets all his other needs.

It's worth having a play with both, our local tesco had ipod touch's on display that you could 'play' with and our local o2 shop has the i phones on display, get her to think about what she think's she'll use it for.

  • Tesco mobile have good deal on the iphone and you can also search on ebay for the odd bargain.

  • She has open access internet and you have no supervision at all over it. For an 11yr old IMHO that is VERY negligent parenting-you have no idea what sites she visits, what she downloads, what she sees, who she is "friending on MSN/f book etc and who is grooming her.

    Totally agree

did the op ask for your opinion? if you agree with that comment you should have pm'd the person who wrote it.

It was actually highlighting a very vaild point, that I feel strongly about as I can imagine many others do, before considering purchasing an iPhone for an 11year old!!!!!

if you know they dont want to hear it then why say it? i thought the op had asked for advice on where to get a good deal on an iphone, not the moral issues of an 11yo owning an iphone and parenting advice.
i know sundays can be boreing but couldnt you go for a walk or something?

The op has also stated that the do not know much about the iPhone and it seems that child safety from inappropriate sites and chat rooms is probably something that hadn't been a consideration until someone brought it up.

Certainly no offense to the op, it was a very good idea to seek advice first and I am sure that the potential risks being highlighted would be appreciated

What are you on? clearly the consensus is that iphone and teenagers just dont mix. I agree with getting an ipod touch that device is more suited for a 11 year old.

Several of the old phones sitting gathering dust in my desk drawer all have "open internet access". The Iphone is marketed as an "internet phone" but people forget that having the internet on a phone is actually nothing very new as a lot of the cheap and basic phones still have internet web browsers, even if they don't have 480x320 pixel screens.

Actually 480x320 is pretty sad by modern standards now that the N900 does 480x800 and even the humble BB curve does 480x360. I don't know what all the fuss about the iphone really is as it's badly out of date.

yeh, you might feel strongly about it, but agreeing with a post that accuses the op's parenting as "negligent" isnt what the op came here for, and i personally thought that remark was out of order. I see this time and time again, people twisting a simple question into something else,,,it just does my head in that people can be so self righteous.

like i said above, the op didnt come here to ask for peoples opinion of the moral issues of an 11year old owning an iphone,,they asked for advice on where to get the best deal on one.

i to think the ipod touch is a good idea,,,thats constructive advice
