I wanna Iphone!

My 11 year old DD desperately wants an Iphone and is saving up madly for one. She tells me that they are about £400 (!) - is that right?

Can anyone point me to any good deals - either on contract or PAYG as I really don't know anything about Iphones. I use a £30 cheapie and am perfectly happy with it.

In Phones 4 U yesterday, I was offered a £35 per month contract with free iPhone. This was on Orange and was a 24 month contract.

They've got the same deal online:

Don't forget quidco though, £35 cashback from them.

Not sure if you've had a look at an iPhone, but I do tend to agree with Browntoa, they look quite fragile and not sure if it is the best phone for an 11 year old. If you took her to a phone shop, they might be able to help you choose a cheaper similar phone which would suit her better.
  • Thanks - Good Idea. I haven't even seen one - not sure she has either. Shows the power of advertising!

The iPhone is actually a very solid and well made phone so I wouldn't be too worried about it being broken, I'd be more concerned with someone nicking it

why dont you get her a second hand one. My daughter is the same with phones, its a nightmare. i would agree that buying a phone for that much for a child is crazy. You can get a 2g 8gb with warranty from play, from £180 unlocked, she would be able to afford it sooner and im sure she would be able to tell the differance with a new one. She probably just wants the kudos of haveing an iphone, not particularly the extra features of the latest model.

Sure, you can buy an Iphone for about £400 depending on which model and how big a memory you want. BUT, it's still going to cost around £20 a month to run, even on PAYG. If you don't get a data inclusive contract, it can get very expensive.

Personally, I think 11 is far too young to have one.
  • Ok, you wont want to hear this but I'm going to say it anyway!

Who is the parent here?? REgardless of whether she wants/can afford an iphone or whether YOU want to fund it for her at £20/month minimum because you have spare money if is actually an appropriate thing to do??

It may get broken or lost (oh sad but no real issues).

It'll get stolen (sad again if you have the money to give away then OK)

She'll get mugged for it- nope regardless of the money it cost I'd not make my kid a target for muggers what ever- she could get seriously hurt or have to live with the worries that she "just gave it away " (the correct response to a mugging I'm afraid).

She has open access internet and you have no supervision at all over it. For an 11yr old IMHO that is VERY negligent parenting-you have no idea what sites she visits, what she downloads, what she sees, who she is "friending on MSN/f book etc and who is grooming her.

    OK shoot me now...

    ...

if you know they dont want to hear it then why say it? i thought the op had asked for advice on where to get a good deal on an iphone, not the moral issues of an 11yo owning an iphone and parenting advice.
i know sundays can be boreing but couldnt you go for a walk or something?
  • Vodaphone have good deals.

Also if the OP wants to buy his/her daughter a phone then that is their decision, some people are still stuck in old times!
Most 11 year olds have top of the range phones, and in experience of buying my brother one, they tend to cherish it! So they look after them very well.
