I don't know about these more recent ones but I've known Dell case fans to have non-standard mounting clips built in to the fan casing and also non-standard power connectors.
I think this fan arrangement is common to quite a lot of their models - I'll try to find one that's the same at work and have a look.

I wonder if the fan is fine though and it's being told to speed up based on a dodgy temperature sensor reading?

    Thanks for responding Ahar :)

The thing is, i can unclip it from the side nearest the hd and then it should slide out from the casing but it seems jammed on the side of the casing and i've tried countless times now but with no luck

how would i find out the fan is reading the temp wrong?

You could try something like HWMonitor and see if the readings shoot up and down together with the fan speed. In my experience though that tool doesn't seem to detect the temperature sensors on Dells for some reason except maybe hard drive temps.
You should be able to access the Dell Diagnostics program by selecting it from the menu you get by hitting F12 just after turning on. Let's see if that finds anything first.

thanks Ahar, HWMonitor is only picking up the hd temps which are 29 - 30degs and nothing else.

am going to try the Diagnostic program as suggested, will post back shortly :)

ok I am satisfied that there is nothing wrong with my hd as it passed the dell diagnostics test and i used speedfan to do an online analysis of the hd and that has come back positive too....phew

  • I find a drop of sewing machine oil in bearing fixes the fan for a year or two. I also have noticed that it is the fans mounted to spin on a vertical axis that fail.
