of course it will be loud dust clogs up and makes it quiet hence dusting and removing it will spin faster etc.

i understand what you're saying but this is really really loud. i've had the pc for 3.5 years and the fan has never been so loud before.

    I repeat-which fan?
Edit-sorry, just seen your reply-you are talking about the PSU fan then (in the box at the top where the mains lead plugs in? Are you sure it's that one?
If so you need to fit a new PSU, you must not try to open the PSU, they are not user serviceable and you could get a shock from it. Easy 10 minute job.

Wow - you really meant that?
Dust decreases cooler efficiency, which generally increases the loading of the fan. Less dust = less work for the fan = less noise :)

...though I do understand the dust will potentially muffle the sound slightly

no it's not the psu fan then if it's where the power cable plugs in, that fan is at the top back of the tower.
my hd is is in the front of the tower at the bottom and this fan is encased in a black box above it. there is another black box attached to the fan box which unscrews easily and this box has a block of metal grills in which cleaned out fine. once this box has been unscrewed i can see the back of the fan and spray air in from there - i have tried removing the fan's casing but i can't seem to dislodge it without forcing it and i dont wanna cause any damage. what is this fan called, any ideas?

hope the above makes sense :p

Can you not take a little picture of it and an arrow pointing to it?

Sounds like the heatsink fan to me. But a pic would be better.

Agree, it sounds like the heatsink fan to me. Does this fan vent to the outside of the case? If so and it's vertically in the tower then it's a case fan.
The heatsink fan will be mounted to draw air away from the motherboard.

  • does the fan sound like its going to take off (that loud?)

Have seen dells (especially gx280's) dieing this way, (resistor /thermostat problem) in that it thinks the computer is over heating, hence the fan going full speed.

You could change the processor fan to one that you can adjust the rpm

wow.....for the first time since yesterday the fan has gone quiet for a few seconds and then speeds up again, it is doing this continuously now..fast slow fast slow....arggh i dunno

  • Looks like a standard case fan inside a custom shroud...just whip it out and buy a same-size replacement...generally the more money you spend the better (and quieter) the fan will be...£8-£15 is the range I'd look in....WITHOUT LEDs
