Mouse&Keyboard Not Responding

I was going to add RAM to a friends old 'Time' Desktop running XP.

Up to last night the computer was working OK.

When I switched the machine on this morning the Mouse & Keyboard were not working!

I have now attached a USB mouse which works and have done a System Restore but the standard Mouse and Keyboard are still not responding.

Device Manager looks OK and it says the old mouse is working properly!

A quick google suggests repairing XP and looking at the BIOS but I cannot do either becuase I don't have a USB keyboard!

Fair enough but catch-22 then; can you not borrow a usb keyboard (later).

Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard (turn machine off first).

    - with your USB mouse still attached go back to the Device Manager and right click on the PS2 mouse and keyboard and hit the delete key, ignore the warning, and delete both PS2 devices

    - shut the computer down

    - re-connect the mouse and boot up, it should find the mouse & apply existing IRQ, drivers etc

    - ditto the keyboard :-\

  • I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse the other day and they didn't work, When I read the leaflet it said that in some circumstances you have to leave a PS/2 keyboard in place for the wireless one to work, which seems crazy to me and it also said that some BIOS did not support that kind of keyboard and mouse. There was a line though that you could contact your motherboard supplier to see if you could get an update.

    Hi

The logitech wireless receiver for my mouse and keyboard plugs into the green PS/2 port. I bought a USB to PS/2 connector.

    Many thanks for the replies.

I thought Device Manager was working OK because under 'Mice and other pointing devices' the HID compliant mouse' was listed without any yellow question mark. This I now realise is the USB mouse not the PS2 mouse!

There does not appear to be any PS2 devices in Device Manager so that is where my problem is. How do I get them back?

It's a Micro Star MS-6340v5. I have just their live update and it appears I have already got the latest BIOS and motherboard drivers.

Must be a big cup then:rotfl:

I have done a bit more googling and think its either a faulty PS2 port or the BIOS is corrupted.

It appears the only way you can access the BIOS is via a PS2 keyboard so even if I got a USB keyboard it would not help me:mad:

I am just about to take the COMS battery out of the motherboard in the hope that it will reset the bios to default settings but I am not to hopeful:(
