I'm sure you have checked this but - What about the batteries in the mouse and keyboard? Unusual for them to both go down at once but my older-type Logitech set often stop functioning together when one of them loses the signal to the computer.

How about taking the Cmos battery out 30 secs, make sure to disconnect power leads aswell, to reset the bios, or download the manual and find the reset pins on the motherboard. Then try the keyboard and mouse again. I dealt its a corrupt bios, due to the fact if 1 bit of data in the bios was wrong it wouldnt boot at all.
to enable USB on the pc go into the bios and change the USB LEGACY settings. it will treat any usb keyboard mouse as a PS/2 mouse/keyboard.

If the computer was fine before you where going to add the memory, what did you do to it to make it stop working ??

I took the CMOS battery out yesterday for 15mins but it didn't help. I was quite suprised because as soon as I reconnected the time was correct-I did not think it would automacitally syn so quickly! Do you still think trying the reset pins will make any difference?

I bought it home in the car, cleaned the inside, which was full of dust, and took out, inspected and replaced the RAM. I suppose any one of these could have caused the problem.

    Do it again,

    - disconnect from the mains
    - use the jumpers to short the EEPROM
    - this time push the start button several times before you re-connect the battery or mains !

I have found the problem! It's a faulty PS2 port.

I found out the hard way by moving the reset pins and then powering on again.

Guess what, I got a CMOS checksum error and needed to press F1 or delete to continue. Without a keyboard I was unable to do either. Anyway I tried moving the keyboard plug in the PS2 socket and low and behold the keyboard came to life.

I assume the PS2 socket has come loose but there appears to no way to tighten it up.

    - if the port is goosed just buy a USB mouse or keyboard about £5 instead

  • This can be a problem I bought a new PS2 keyboard which gave me big time checksum errors on boot and would not get past the post screen.
Have you tried the old keyboard? if so does it work?
Unplug and plug the PS2 keyboard only when the power is off this can cause havoc with the bios if done while the PC is on and caused me great headache

Thanks, I did not realise they were so cheap. I have had a USB mouse for ages and I am sure it cost over a tenner. I have just seen a USB keyboard for less than £4:D

It can cause much more than a BIOS problem, it can blow the PS/2 port and/or the keyboard or mouse.
