avoiding the valentine's rip-off support thread

valentines day seems even more commercialised and in your face than ever this year. i always thought it was meant to be about sending an anonymous card or message to someone you had your eye on and the intrigue for them was guessing who sent it. an inexpensive and fun bit of flirtation.

now it's all about valentine day menus, hotels, weekend breaks, overpriced flowers, even more overpriced chocolates, even buying 'special' underwear for the 'big' day.

i'm sick of it. me and the OH will definitely not be indulging in any of these valentines day rip-offs.

thought others could post their thoughts and also the most ridiculous valentines themed goods they have seen. prices before (and after) the big day could be amusing too.

i saw a single red rose in a tigger-themed holder for 8 quid in tesco. bleurgh!

Couples stole the day from lonely singles ....
  • I made OH a card. Ha says he hasn't got me anything but will make breakfast in bed in the morning.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Same with Mothers Day. I work Saturdays so I always leave him with enough sticking-and-glueing things for him to help the kids make me a card each. They can make a surprise card for me at a fraction of the cost. And the cards mean much more.

Valentine's Day is just another brand that shifts a lot of over-priced gear. Some people buy into it, other's don't.

My DD has bought some vile, red, stuffed 'troll' with 'I love you' daubed across it for her BF - my fault for sending her on an errand to the post office...

I'm avoiding it this year by being single :p

What always gets me is why a boyfriend thinks that, for one day of the year, a girl turns into someone else. I mean, if you're the kind of girl that hates sloppy music, romantic films and being ripped off by marketing, why buy you a Best Romance CD, some horrible pink-girlie book with a love heart on it, and expect you to want to see a Rom-Com just because it's February 14th?

I could really do without Valentine's Day to be honest!

OH's birthday is February 17 and while I dont mind buying him a nice present for his birthday, the 2 of them combined cost me a fortune!

Last year it cost me about 200 quid  ditto this year!!!

We generally just use Valentine's Day as an excuse to have a nice dinner made at home (DH is making sweet and sour pork with rice tonight) after the children are in bed. But we do that once or twice a month anyway, so it's really not for Valentine's Day anyway. We've always felt it was best to show each other we care 365 days a year, not just one. I prefer a small gesture on an ordinary day than flowers (which I rather detest receiving) and sweets on some contrived "special day."

  • It's only commercialised if you let it! I celebrate Valentines and I have a lovely book & card to show for it :D. And we're heading off the Pizza Express for lunch....any excuse really!!

My housemate bought his girlfriend flowers, earrings AND has booked them a mini break next weekend....but she dumped him yesterday. Ouch.
