I have a few jars that don't pop when they are sealed, i have found these to be the ones which at some point a knife (or similar impliment) has been used to help to prise the lid open at some point when previously it contained presrves.... and that had weakened the seal. If i use them at all, i tend to put those ones in the fridge and use those up first.

Thanks all. Will prob end up making some more anyway, as I'd like a jar for myself :D

One more question.... once you've opened the chutney to use, do you have to store it in the fridge & eat within so many weeks, or can it go back in a dark cupboard & be kept for years?

    Thanks

you can put it back in the cupboard - mine usually only lasts at most a year as if I have any left by the time I'm ready to make the next batch, I find some way of using it up. Not because I'm bothered that it's gone off, but I have limited shelf space :)

  • Yesterday, I pimped my chutney jars (pretty jar covers, labels, gift tags, etc), then put them back in the cupboard. I didn't open the jars at all. Today, I noticed that the popper seal on one of the larger jars has popped back out. I have no idea why?? Will it still be okay? I'd hate to think I'm doing all this for nothing :(
  • Now the seal thingy has popped back out on the other jar (even though I haven't opened either of them) :(

Please tell me they will still be okay as Christmas gifts :wall:
  • Anyone have a recipe for green tomato chutney please?
