Windows 7 Laptop So Slow!

Comments

  • "Windows failed to start" message, trying again in 'normal mode'.
  • Nah its not getting any further than "Setup is updating registry settings" just shuts down at that point, its not happy!
  • When you did the second attempt, did you delete the partitions again or just re-use the ones from the first attempt?
  • I'm getting concerned now :(

can you remove the RAM that you fit and try again, on a clean drive there's no software to cause the issues...so hardware only...2 'most likely" are overheating and RAM, and the RAM is the new kid..
I take it there are no errors reported?

  • It is getting kinda hot yes!

In Safe Mode it gets as far as this...

    /windows/system32/DRIVERS/disk.sys

    Then chucks out this message:

Windows cannot complete installation in Safe Mode. To continue restart computer.

But restarting isn't getting far, possibly due to heat, I may give it an hour to cool down or maybe put it in the fridge.
  • Don't put it in the fridge! It may get a bit damp in there, depending on how often you defrost it.
  • Its OK we defrosted recently, so I put the lappy in a Tescos biodegradable carrier bag and carried out an express cool down in the freezer.

This is good, it has now restarted several times and I have just popped in the product key, fingers crossed this should end well!

You may have a lot of dust covering the heatsinks and causing it to overheat; the most effective way to clean it is to open it up (there is a full guide on the Dell support site). You can also clear it to some extent by blowing hard into the fan inlets when the computer is off. There is also a BIOS update available to improve thermal control.
  • Hay guess what?!

I'm using my previously broken lappy to type this, all working fine and W7 wizzing along after the clean instal as it should.

Big thanks to those who contributed on this thread!

I think the laptop may have some heat issues I will look further into that, but for now at least its perfect.

    Thank you all.

Been reading this thread with interest as I am planning to upgrade from XP on my home laptop. Have Windows 7 at work and it is great.

Whilst I know a 'bit' about computers I'm no techy ... think'll get someone in to give me a hand. I'd panic if something went wrong.

    Happy surfing wrkactjob. :j

Good to know there were people prepared to help you out. :T
