was just gonna ask same Q as could be taken a few ways
ie why do we have to hello when addressing someone ie 'Hello, did the postie leave a parcel for me'
If this is what op means, its cause its called manners and is expected in society as a salutation
Or maybe she feels she need to say hello to neighbours when she sees them?
This again is manners to uphold some friendliness with neightbours rather than just ignoring them as they have nothing else to say?
Or does op mean something else?
I dunno!0 -

My neighbour is kinda funny sometimes and you never really know whether to speak or not. I'll speak to anyone and often say hi to people I don't know but she makes me feel awkward and I never know whether to say hi first or completely ignore her. :rotfl:
I think it's always better to say hi first, that way people know you're friendly and if they don't want to reciprocate then more fool them. At least by speaking first you get over that 'will we speak, wont we speak' thing. Unless of course you're my neighbour. Then I wont practice what I preach and I'll just stand there feeling stupid.:DHerman - MP for all!

If Red Devil puts a full-stop after "someone" and a capital letter on "weird" it does make sense.
Yes, over the years I have known several neighbours who would just not speak unless I spoke first. Really I think they were just shy and no offence was intended.
Or they just realized that I am nut-case!"If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"

It is hard to understand what you mean, it reads like you have to say hello first to somone wierd, and you have to explain that to them.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I had a neighbour like this once. I never knew whether they were shy, or cross with me over something, stand-offish by nature or just moody, full stop.
I hated the uncertainty and being made to feel guilty for some unknown sin and in the end just ignored them. Your loss lady, since all the rest of us smile and say good morning and lend the neighbour's kids our puncture repair outfit ...
It is rude since by definition it makes someone else feel uncomfortable.0 -

No offence meant, but if that's your interpretation then you're weirder than you think the OP's opening comment was. :rotfl:
(Just banter
