I didn't know that, I have heard that things are getting much stricter with plates now, I also thought that borders were also supposed to be getting banned too?

I know from experience my sister had to change her plates due to incorrect spacing and another friend had to change his plate due to incorrect spacing and a border.

Personally I can understand why they are doing it, so the police computers can read the plates, but surely if the font is correct the computer should be able to read the plate anyway?

I have always thought it was very wrong when you see plates with italics or screws in the wrong place, so you either can't read the plate or it is made to look like something else. But I don't really get the issue with the spacing.

On another note, I don't understand how they can make it illegal to sell a show plate because at the end of the day it is not the sellers fault how a person chooses to use the plate, that would be like making it illegal to sell knives because some people might use them as a weapon.

Interesting thing about the borders. I ordered my plates with borders. Searching on the net it seems there's no clear consensus on their legality. According to the MOT test plate regulations "a non-reflective border wider than permitted or positioned too close to the characters" will fail the MOT.

Seems to be too much conflicting info on the net with some reports of fines for having a border of the type I have, and the possibility of being pulled over and a £60 fine makes me all too happy to buy another set of plates for under £8 delivered. Still a saving on Halfords.

Also just found out the number plate supplier on Ebay, DJH Numberplates, are not on the DVLA register of authorised registration plate sellers http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/vehicles/search.aspx?ext=dg I suppose that explains the lack of need for documents. There's nothing to suggest to me that they don't meet any of the other legal requirements in terms of font, spacing, reflectivity etc though.
  • Hi there,
i was about to buy a new number plate for my car trailer untill i read this forum. Does anyone know if trailer number plates need to be 'road legal' as i was about to buy from an ebay trader who makes up metal plates which are far more durable on a trailer than the plastic ones. The trader describes the plates as 'for show only' on vehicles so requires no documentation.
    Thanks for any info.

I'm not sure but I was pulled over last week towing the trailer and the thing they seemed most interested in was the brake wire and that it was working and clipped on (since then I have asked around and they seem to be charging folk for the brake cable).

I have an EBay plate on the trailer they didn't say anything (probably didn't notice it).

How many trailers have plates totally unrelated to the car.

Im in the market for some new plates, looking for standard lettering but with the Vauxhall Griffin badge where the EU thing would be. Im pretty sure that as long as the letters/spacing are ok, nobody will be too bothered.

Yes, I've heard a few stories recently about people being stopped to check that the breakaway cable is attached properly, with people being fined for not having one, not having one attached, or attaching it by looping it around the towball.

I'm not sure at what age a trailer needs to have the cable fitted... or how either party proves how old a trailer is.

Apparently, the EU strip doesn't need to be present at all OR it can be replaced with other images/letters, however whilst this is legal in the UK these will not be allowed in Europe unless the car displays the old GB stickers.
So i'll go for the VX griffin badge in place of the EU strip :D

The only possible fall over point is that plates made after 2001 have to display the BS standard and the makers postal code. My car's current plates don't have this anyway....... I wonder how many do??? :(

Are you sure about that?...I think you are possibly wrong.

You're right about the EU strip but you can't just put anything you want there instead (legally anyway). The only things officially allowed other than the EU thing is the Union Jack, English, Scottish or Welsh flags along with text saying 'UK', 'England', 'GB' or something like that. Or no strip at all is fine as well.
