I've been buying GB number plates on eBay from "djh_numberplates" for £7.40 a pair.

Thanks for that, saved me a trip to the factors :)

    Post September 2001
Characters must be 79mm high and 50mm wide with a stroke of 14mm.Inter-character gap is 11mm and the space between the two parts of the registration number is 33mm.The only font allowed is based on the "Charles Wright" font.

Once again these regulations apply to number plates FITTED after September 2001 .So your car could be 1974 but it would still need to comply IF THE NUMBER PLATES ARE CHANGED.

It has never been legal to use screws etc to alter the appearance of the characters on the plate and the only other option when buying them is the EU emblem with a national flag e.g. Saltire.

To make all this enforceable every number plate suppliers must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and must show his name and post code on each number plate he supplies.
In addition you must supply proof of I.D.when buying plates ( preferrably a photocard driving licence ) and also proof that the number is yours( V5 registration document ( log book) , V750 (pink) or V778 (green) certificate for the registration number, V11 vehicle licence renewal, or V948).
The supplier must keep records of all the above and make them available to the police if requested.
    taken from this link. http://www.northumbrianumbers.com/platelaw.php

a motor factor i know but wont name names failed to keep records or rather adequit records of plates made, e.g a garage well known calls up gives the reg and asks for the plate to be made, instead of entering the person details into the best plate machine they put the name of garage their supplieing buit stuck to the law on public sales i e over the counter sales. tradeing standards sent two cars to a garage who dealt with this motor factors both requiring new plates and other work. new plates were supllied by motor factors and the tradeing standards dropped a bombshell on garage and tradeing standards also sent a TS officer to motor factors to check best plate machine in wich he found inadequit records of number plates printed motor factors was fined an amout of £10.000 pounds and was told to cease printing plates by the dvla.

of course its up to you the indevidual to decide where to purchase plates to, im ot telling you all to not buy online but just to be wary of them. if this was a post about a person selling plates onlline then we'd advise the law on selling them yes?
as these people are selling online you have to ask yourself are they doing it legaly i.e registered with dvla if not then theyre printing illegal plates and one must ask if theyre doing it illegaly what other illegal things are they doing that we/you the buyer could be funding by purchaseing the plates?

The plates supplied via eBay meet all of those requirements apart from the request for documentation.

I can't see that places do much with the documentation anyway other than a photocopy as proof documentation was seen. I presume the difficulties come when the people with teeth (if there are any) come to visit and ask to see records. Chance of that happening? None! They're all out to do the motorist out of as many £60's as possible :D much more profitable. I think the Ferengi work for DVLA and the Government :rotfl:

Not knocking the ebay seller though. New plates ordered for another car :D

I would not bother with online number plate manufacturers. I recently had some made up with an online trader and the quality was terrible. At least with Halords or a Motor Factors you can have a refund if you are not happy with the quality.

I recently bought some number plates from an ebay seller based in Hull & they were perfect. If an ebay item is faulty the buyer can claim a refund from the seller.

    Not true!
I think that you will find that poor quality is not refundable through paypal.
In my case I failed to get a refund. I returned the plates under the instruction of the seller, the seller did not refund and ignored all emails and paypal were not interested...usual paypal story.

I had another set made up at my local motor factors and they were perfect and more or less the same price as online number plate traders.

    So why take the risk?

Surely the ebay sellers will get around the documentation requirement by simply putting a quick sentence such as "these plates are show plates.... not for road use.....", how the buyer then uses them is not the ebay sellers fault is it?

They may actually meet the road legal requirements anyway, but that is just how I presume they get around the documentation problem.

It's also supposed to be illegal to sell show plates now. If you look at the auctions you'll see they're sold as road legal plates, meeting all legal requirements.
