If i were you and you don't intend to give a refund, take any money out of your paypal account to leave nothing in it because otherwise paypal will freeze your account and give them their money back. Don't trust Paypal

    Thanks Pep's.

I have emailed back asking him to email me back with the serial number and to post it back to me and I will have apple repair/replace for him, or he can do it himself.

    See what happens.

    ^well said.

also, you should contact the buyer and explain that they did not buy the item, they won it through auction, an so was basically sold as seen.
say that you are not obligated to offer an refund / replacement as nothing was agreed upon before hand. they agreed to your conditions and still brought the item BUT advise them to contact apple, show your 'nice' side too :)
show your willing to help but are sticking to the rules.

It was presumably working at first and then the error occurred - from the email the buyer sent. I would have not given them a refund - for all you know it could be a different ipod you get back.

If an item is working when sold and delivered and then breaks - tough. I think you would also have found that PayPal would have ruled in your favour if a complaint had been raised.

Might be worth firing off an email to Apple to ask them can the buyer send it back to them??

but the item was with the buyer for a week before they reported a fault, meaning they received the item in full working condition but since has been in their hands a fault has occurred
    so...
the item was sold in full working condition.
