BT Contract - Help Getting Out

Comments

  • I am with BT via a netgear router. I had no idea how to set it up and went onto the pc advisor website forum wher e I got all the help I needed from a really nice member called Ambra who guided me through the whole set up procedure. They also said to use a different channel from channel 11 which is the default channel. They suggested 8/9. I was so pleased with the help I got, it may be worth a look there.

I also want to leave BT to go with O2 ( which is half the price and faster too) but am tied to BT till mid May. Frustrating isn't it?!

Hope this helps a bit anyway.
  • When I connected my netgear router I had to go to the netgear website to get the info on how to do it. The info included an http address for netgear. I went on that and got to where I could login and change settings including the channel.

Not sure how that would work with a bt router.

    Good luck.

    Depending on your OS,
XP is Run box, type cmd push enter key, type ipconfig in black/white box.
Vista and Win7 Searchbox type cmd then push enter key then type ipconfig.
Look for the 'Default Gateway' e.g.192.168.1.1
Put the number into your browser address bar and your router will be available.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Im currently with BT Unlimited Broadband with Line Rental, I joined in October 2009 and Im currently in a 18 month contract, but I've had problems since day one, the speed is rarely better than 1mb and the connection drop on average 10-20 an hour, this makes it impossible for me to watch anything streamed from iplayer, 4od etc.

Im paying £40 a month for a ridiculously bad service but as the house was new build, it was join BT or pay for the line installed.

Does anyone have any ideas about getting out of the contract?

    Thanks

    Sir L

For BT customers who have free evening/weekend call plans the recent change in the terms and conditions (ie) BT off peak timing changes from 6.00pm to 7.00pm will allow you to leave your BT contract without any penalties even if you still have months left to run.

Phone 0800 800 150 (BT customer services) say you are unhappy with the changes to T&C's and ask for MAC code.

    Hi,

Although that MIGHT help you get out of your BT telephone contract, not sure how this helps in terms of BT Broadband???

A mac is to change broadband

The terms of contract for evening and weekend plan is not related to broadband as thats a separate contract so charges would still apply if you take a mac and cancel broadband with BT if your still in contract with BT broadband. The changes do not allow you you to get out of broadband contracts.

actually they can - or at least they did for me .... how the heck do you log onto a router???

    Mark

As said above - log into your router by finding your default gateway ip address.

If its one of those ugly homehubs - its actually a web address bthome.hub (i think) or usually 192.168.1.254

All the info (including admin password) is on the hub.

You can change the channel for the wireless, but unless you have alot of conflicting wireless signals in the area (neighbors) this won't do much.

My advice would be to ethernet your laptop/computer to the router and then perform speed tests via the cable, ruling out wireless completely

But that wouldn't give an accurate reading of how fast the wireless speed is, would it?

I understood that ethernet speed is usually about twice as fast as wireless speed anyway because of interference etc.

    Hi SirLancealot,

Did changing the wireless channel help? The info given already is spot on, but if you're having problems with check out the link below for instructions on how to do that if you have BT Home Hub is at:

    http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_adp.php?p_sid=aeWWpNUj&cat_lvl1=346&cat_lvl2=502&cat_lvl3=503&p_cv=3.503&p_cats=346,502,503&p_faqid=9605

If you don't have any problems when connected via ethernet (in terms of speed/reliability) this will be a good indication that there's interference of some sort that's affecting the wireless connection.

If the Hub near other electrical appliances e.g. TV, microwave, DVD recorders etc? Sometimes changing the location of the Hub to somewhere where there's less interference can go a long way in improving reliability.

    Keep us posted :)
