BT Contract - Help Getting Out

Im currently with BT Unlimited Broadband with Line Rental, I joined in October 2009 and Im currently in a 18 month contract, but I've had problems since day one, the speed is rarely better than 1mb and the connection drop on average 10-20 an hour, this makes it impossible for me to watch anything streamed from iplayer, 4od etc.
Im paying £40 a month for a ridiculously bad service but as the house was new build, it was join BT or pay for the line installed.
Does anyone have any ideas about getting out of the contract?
Thanks
Sir L

Hi,
Have you escalated it within BT? Also have you checked with you neighbours to see whether they are having issues with broadband .... might be a problem with the line??

I've escalated with BT and they say theres no issue with it from their end but my pc and my laptop constantly pick up two other connections from either side that are with Sky.
BT say they can send someone to check the problem but if there is no issue, I have to pay the call out charge, if you cancel with BT, do you pay the full installation cost or a pro-rata amount.0 -

1. Is your wiring a bit dodgy ....look at the junction box (where the telephone comes into the house & your wire goes to your modem) - is it loose, can it move .... move it slightly & see whether you loose the connection ... I have issues with this ...
2. how far from the main junction box is your broadband .,...
3. What speed to BT say you should be getting? Are you getting this?
4. Your neighbours - they use SKY - do they have any issues? Maybe it being a new house is causing you issues?
5. Do you have any wireless phones in the house - cause they can cause issues ... have you changed the channel on the router - have you switched the phones off for a while & see whether the situation improves? Is the router near the phones? Move it elsewhere? Does that help?
6. Try posting your issues on the techie board, someone might be able to help.
You do realise that if you try & cancel your BT contract, they will take you to court for the reminder of the contract - so might 13x£40 = £520!!! So be careful!!!

First thing to do is change the channel on your wireless router then. If the speed to the router is OK, it's really not a BT issue, it's your wireless connection.
What speed do you get when connected by ethernet? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Have you attempted to switch off the phones - assuming you have wireless phones ....??

I am with BT and tried to cancel. However, I didn't because they have a policy of always pursuing the full charges that would be due til the end of the contract. This would involve the full monthly fee, plus the pro-rated installation fee for every month that you fail to make the 10 required calls.
What they do offer though is free technical support. I would suggest that you refer all your queries to them (as well as on here) for as long as it takes to check everything out because, if they are still unable to help, then they may decide to send round an engineer at their cost in order to get you off the phone to them....0 -

Log into the router via your normal web browser and change it under wireless settings. BT can't do this, it's a setting on your router! No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
