Every surge protector that I have bought came with a lifetime guarantee; if a surge causes it to stop working, the manufacturer will replace it.

    Might be worth checking out.

I currently use a surge protector for my desktop and all of its peripherals (not phone line, but modem is a piece of cheap ISP tat), TV in the lounge has one on it too.

Still need to buy one for my laptop, how expensive are those single plug ones?

Yep you are right Kilty, Belkin one that I have offers a replacement and covers think £30,000 of equipment if it fails and equipment damaged - and no chance of me having anything costing anywhere near that amount.
Saw some Belkin travel surge protectors from about £8.50 on Amazon marketplace, so you could have a look there. Can't remember what I paid for the ones we have, I have a Belkin, can't remember what hubby has.
You can possibly get them cheaper than that.

Will a surge protector work if it is plugged into another extension lead, and is it safe to do this?

The reason I ask is that I have a shortage of power sockets in my house. At the moment my PC, router & printer are all plugged into an extension reel in my front room. The extension reel is plugged in to a wall socket in the dining room! (I can't fit the PC in the dining room and there are no spare wall sockets in here).

Can I plug a surge protector into the extension reel and run my computer equipment from that, and will the surge protector work? Thanks!

Should be fine, the surge protector will still work as normal for all the devices connected to it.

Can surges damage your items when they are turned off but still plugged in?

regarding six socket units, unless these also include a built in power converter, they're not safe, the maximum cummulative ampage you should put thru any wall socket is 13, the lowest amapge you'll find on any product (plug) will be 3 amps, so any more than for item (3x4 = 12) would break this ampage limit, you PC etc will be protected from surges, but it might just overload your wall socket & burn your house down instead!.

It doesn't work like that. The surge protection is protecting against incoming 'spikes' (high voltages) and not sudden demand from appliances.

An appliance with a 3 amp fuse fitted in the plug does not mean that it will take 3 amps. As for maximum loading on wall sockets, those trailing adapters with four or more sockets on have 13 amp fuses in the plug, the maximum permitted, hence some people refer to UK 3-pin plugs as "13 amp plugs".

Personally I'd like posts in these forums to have another button in addition to "THANKS" that you (and I) could have pressed in this instance.
This "Bo||ocks" button would come in handy SO OFTEN !!

Yeah kind of like Digg. Where you can approve or disapprove of the post. That way it stops inaccuracies.

Might be something worth suggesting on the Site forum.
