  • I have IBS, if i need to go at work i go. If i am in town and need to use public toilet i will.

Unfortunatelly its a case of not if i want to go any where but i must go!

  • what's really embarrassing is when your small child comments 'mummy did a poo' in a loud voice in a public place.

I know the feeling. The other one is "Why are you wearing annappy mummy?"

  • I have been married over 25 years and my husband has never, ever seen me seated on the loo (although he's seen me with my bonnet up - aka having a caesarian). Some things are just way too private!

Very interesting topic here. I have no problems using loos when out and about or here at work. I line the seat with paper, or hovver if there is none (I carry tissues, just in case). I put a few sheets in the bowl as I hate splash and, if there is a lid I put that down so there is no splashback when I flush. When I have to go, I have to go.

I have been known to do an interim flush to minimise odours, before the final flush, and my mother always used to carry a box of matches in her bag to light one before leaving the cubicle.
  • Although I've always suffered this issue with pooing I went through a phase at the office where I just had to go. It was a bit of an IBS thing. There was a witch-hunt to find out who was making the dreadful smell in the loo and comments were made such as "Whatever do they eat?" I was mortified and unable to either stop pooing or confess to being 'the culprit'. In general, women are more sensitive than men to odours and some men do confess that they prefer not to associate their woman with bad odour and that it reduces their attraction to them. I agree that the issue is the toilet design. It should take the phobias and beliefs of the majority into account so as to promote the nation's health and comfort when away from home. I'm very grateful to Martin for raising this issue and it would be great if he could get changes made even though I can't help finding it very very funny!!
  • I am a man so I probably shouldn't comment but I've always believed you should poo at work for thee reasons:
    1. More leisure time at home
    2. It saves money on toilet paper (Martin would be proud!)
    3. There is no greater feeling than sitting on the loo knowing you are being paid for every minute you do.
So forget your worries and get into a routine of number two-ing at least once a day at work.

  • The reason a wee in a public loo is OK is that it is associated with the sound of water falling which is considered an attractive sound and the activity is accepted as needing to be done several times a day. Doing a poo in a public loo is associated with foul odour, gross noises that fill others with mirth and disgust and in UK culture, a lack of regard for the comfort of others and since many people only go once a day the thought behind the disapproval is that you can choose where you do it. Those who complain about someone who poos in public are attaching a lack of respect to the action. In my experience some of those people who confidently poo in public are in fact people who demonstrate a disregard for the feelings of others in other areas where the consequences can cause far, far greater problems than those resulting from simply having a dump in a public situation!

Bonnet up - ha ha!!! I like it!!

I have, once, seen my OH on the loo (she had her drink spiked and there was stuff coming out of all holes and she didn't have a clue what was going on!)

And my OH has never seen me on the loo, nor have i ever let one go in front of her - no idea why i can't.
  • I was brought up to believe it was not ladylike to poo in public where others know what you are doing!! You just didn't broadcast the fact either by the noise made or the .... ummm .... aroma following you out the door!! Men seem to get away with a lot of things - they can fart while they poo and be doing up their flies while they leave. Heck they even wee in front of eachother. They spit in the streets and all sorts of other things, which although not socially acceptable is mentally greeted with "he's a man after all" .... but if a woman was to spit in the street or ..... heaven forbid!!!

I really do think it all boils down to the fact that we would all be sniggering away if the beautifully turned out Angelina or Cheryl Cole or the like were to be seen beautifully dressed gliding into a public loo, even in a posh hotel public loo and all we heard were wet and windies with a distinctly different perfume following them out than followed them in ....

it just aint ladylike and I truly think that is why we find it hard to just .... let it all go!!!
