Laptop, scratchy sound.

You can actually get Windows 7 drivers for this sound card. First, uninstall your existing driver. Now try the Windows 7 driver from another laptop with a similar sound card, like the Latitude E4300. If that doesn't work, there is a great guide here:

In addition to gaining full Windows 7 support, the drivers from that link add a much better control panel with an equalizer.
Good idea, did as suggested but no difference. Nice control panel though, dolby, srs, equaliser, loads of functionality.
Not the speakers either. Tried headphones, no difference.0 -
Any more thoughts anyone? It is starting to get annoying now!
e.g. if you watch something on youtube the audio sounds like it is coming from a scratched 78 record if anyone can remember that far back......0 -

You say scratchy...I'm wondering if it could also be described as popping?
This is probably an irrelevant anecdote, but I might as well share: I had a PC where if I used certain drivers, the volume control wouldn't work and things at certain sample rates (usually flash videos) would make popping noises (due to clipping?).
(Might be remembering it wrong, might be that one set of drivers had a failed volume control and the other had the popping...)0 -

Hmmmm......I think its Windows 7.
Is there anyway I can get the laptop to play something without resorting to reverting to reinstalling XP?0 -

I have never Linux'd before so it might be a rather steep learning curve?0
