Valentines gifts etiquette

So this is the first year for some time that I am hoping to receive a valentines gift:j, boyfriend has hinted that there may be some sort of gift heading my way. However I sort of feel a bit bad about it actually as it all seems rather one sided, as I get flowers etc and then hand over to him just a card, in the shops it seems all about buying for the female and the male just gets a nice card.

Is this the way everyone else does things or do you buy gifts for your OH too??

I always bought something for my boyfriend ie funny boxer short and a cd he liked etc. Last year I said no presents to my husband now as we have a daughter but he still gave me flowers and he only got a card. This year I have said budget of £10 for a token present and card - hopefully he will listen as he can spend more thereafter for my birthday.

I don't see any reason why it has to be one sided. If he's getting you something I'm sure he'd be really pleased to get something in return. Maybe his favourite chocolate or alcoholic beverage of choice?

OH and I don't bother at all though, I'm not into flowers, I'm permanently on a diet and we both think its a bit artificial and forced.

This is mine and my boyfriend's first Valentines together, and we've bought each other some gifts alongside a card.

I know a friend who only buys her boyfriend a card, and he does the same for her. They've done it every year since they've been together.
  • who says the man only gets a card?
it isnt "womens day" its valentines... presents go both ways!

having said that this is the first year we havent bought pressies, we dont have a lot of money at the moment so rather than blow any on inflated priced tat.. we are splashing out on the ingredients for a yummy 3 course meal of our favourite food to have that night :)
  • Deffo buy for OH if he is buying for me.

  • It is our wedding anniversary on valentines day but we only do cards. Most things that are bought are put away or not used so a waste imo.
Last year we did go for a meal though.

I think there's plenty for men for valentines day tbh, sweets, boxers, mugs, even furry handcuffs ;)

All on sale at your local supermarket if you just want to give a small girft.

I would feel bad getting a gift and not giving something in return, it's Valentines day for men too.

Saying that, hubby and I aren't bothering with gifts this year (saving pennies) - we are 'treating' ourselves to a DVD and a chinese and spending the evening together. Can't be bothered going out, everywhere will be so busy.

I've always bought my partner a gift and card.

He's lucky cus I found one of the odd 1940's home decor thingies he likes (it looks like a bowl made of black metal poles terminated with colourful balls).

He doesn't buy me flowers as we both agree that they're way overpriced at that time of year but he has often bought me a pot plant in the vain hope I will develop some green fingers (I managed to kill the cactus he bought me last year).

Mine will get me a gift of some sort and I will usually (begrudgingly) give him one in return.

I prefer to give spontaneous gifts with the exception of birthdays and Christmas, and don't like being forced into having a brainwave in time for this particular day. It's not that I think it should be only one-way cause I don't.

Having said that, this year I'm going to make him a card and in it will be a teasing little ...and your Valentines present will come later... and it and our anniversary gift and probably his birthday gift too will be one large gift rather than three smaller ones.

We always buy a little something for each other. They aren't ever expensive pressies, just a little token. This year the OH is getting some retro love-themed sweets, I expect he'll get me a bunch of flowers. This year we agreed a £5 maximum so we could go to our favourite restaurant together and split the cost.
