I think the violin strings are coming out here. Everyone in the country can get some form of benefit, whatever money you are on.
No work? I find that hard to believe, there are always paper rounds, shelf stacking jobs, christ ironing and gardening by knocking on doors! There is always something, whether or not it is below you is another matter.

I chose against going to Uni and got myself much further than most people I know now coming out with nothing. For degrees in Law/Medicine etc then yes Uni is essential, but for most students, studying Events Management is just an excuse to go drinking daily. I couldn't afford to smoke, so last Jan I gave up, 40 a day to nothing makes a difference in your pocket. I used to go out most days, but now I probably use one bottle of wine a month, which is mainly for cooking, another massive saving.

I find lots of sob stories come about when people have plenty of choice. I see no reason why anyone should fund people for free? If you want the degree, then you take the debts that come with it and accept that the degree must be important enough to be able to repay it or mean enough to accept them.
If you're studying something for the sake of it, then that's no reason for us to feel guilt about it not repaying.

    P

I have no debts or bank charges. I was just giving an example.

As for jobs, paper round? lol, knocking on doors? nope. We live in a individualistic society. If I did that I would sure as hell get funny looks and possibly my collar felt by the local police lol.

Jobs are impossible to come by, even toilet assistants. Been there and got the T-shirt.

Sorry, got to take issue with that one. Jobs aren't impossible to come by. Maybe dream jobs are, but there are always jobs. I was lucky in that I got the first full time job I applied for; however it's a job that a whole lot of people would not even consider doing. The scrap is for graduate jobs; but if you keep going you will get a job. Nothing is impossible!

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time
  • I don't have a problem with the charges, but the amount they charge.

How much should they chagre? Remember also that these charges are in the terms and conditions.

Jobs are 'near' impossible to come by.

For graduates, taking non-graduate jobs can be a problem as employers 'know' they will do a runner once things pick up (if they ever will).

Then there is 'experience'. No need to explain that one as it is obvious where I'm going with that one.

  • There are plenty of jobs around. McDonalds are hiring again, as well as starbucks, cleaners etc. If you need a job, then you take whatever is out there - simple.

As for benefits for everyone, I'm a student again (at the age of 29) studying medicine and I get £500pm bursary to pay for everything, it's not enough but I try as hard as I can. I'm not entitled to any additional money or benefits - but if you can tell me where these "benefits for everyone" is, I'd love to know :)

You talk a lot of sense, I always say that being proud does not pay the bills. Benefits, what a joke. All the best

What basic support? I'm talking from the perspective of no benefits, no parental help and delayed students loans.

I don't agree that banks charges are fair, especially when it is no longer under your control. Case of getting blood out of a stone. (I've never been charged myself)

    'simples'.

Bank charges are under your control All you have to do is not spend money that isn't yours without permission. Then - no bank charges.

    Simples.

I have natwest graduate account myself.

What are the chances of Natwest calling in the full overdrawn balance?

err example: How many months of account inactivity would they call it in?

Minimal as long as something is paid in each month.

If the account is left for 3 months without having anything paid in then theres a good chance the debt managment team might start to take an interest.....

This wouldn't be a problem if you could switch off unauthorised overdrafts and require auth at each sale (this works perfectly fine in NZ and with the Visa/Mastercard systems). Simples.

It will never happen though because banks make too much money off unauthorised overdraft charges.
