My sister is exactly the same - she refused to even try the dress on today (3 days til the receipt runs out...) because she was feeling 'fat'. She's refusing to buy shoes or even give a little bit of help towards arranging everything!

Well, I would take it back as it is obviously going to be the wrong size if she's feeling "fat"......and ask her if she is planning to wear her slippers or wellies to the event? :D
  • My sister bought her own bridesmaid dress, she'd decided what she was wearing before I'd even thought about my own dress.

A couple of years ago, I was the bridesmaid for what was a very good friend of mine and had to pay for my own dress, shoes, jewellery etc. To be honest this really niggled me as she could comfortably have afforded to pay for it. I know it may sound petty but for me it really overshadowed the day and the experience of being a bridesmaid (along with the fact that she insisted that I have access to an online spreadsheet that detailed all the wedding expenditure down to the last penny - I really had no interest in knowing, surely those sort of things are meant to be private?)
Personally when I get married I would never dream of asking my bridesmaids to pay for their dresses. In my view people spend enough travelling to a wedding and potentially staying somewhere overnight without expecting them to pay for an outfit they are unlikely to ever wear again.

Things were really tight for us so we had one bridesmaid and one flower girl. The flower girl was my niece and when I was her mums bridesmaid I had to buy the pattern and material for my dress. She picked it all so I had no say in it and I was a student. The same pattern was then used to make the other bridesmaids dresses (no idea who paid for the material).

So I asked my cousin to pay for my nieces dress. I didn't feel bad about this as they had obviously set the precedent. They also pressured me into having her as a flower girl. I also asked my friend- who said yes, but I could tell was a bit put out by it. I felt very, very bad. So I went ahead and bought one. It was from a high street store, in the party range so very bridesmaid-ish. It was also on sale so we saved pennies there. I was of the view that I would rather fork out for it than risk having an unhappy bridesmaid.

I come from a huge family (lots of cousins) and could have had about 15 bridesmaid but we couldn't afford it so opted for just the one.
  • I have 6 BM. All under 16 and close family.

I said from the start that I wouldn't be paying for their dresses as when I was BM for their mother's, my mum had to pay...... My gran has now offered to pay for them which has been a nightmare TBH.

So yes I asked them to pay, but no they are not now....
