i read on (this was the spammy bit and not quoting) about this brilliant new bridesmaid dress company called two birds (if you put two birds into the search box it comes up) where you buy one dress but it can be worn in different ways to suit all shapes and sizes - really genius!!

This person has made 3 posts on this forum, and managed to fit a mention of that website into each post. Someone should report it as spam and get the user's account blocked (IMHO).

To add to the thread, my best friend got married a couple of years ago and asked all 7 bridesmaids to buy their own dresses. She picked a style from Warehouse (£70 each). I had to buy mine and my daughter's (and shoes and handbags to accessorise). I couldn't afford it at the time, and we've never worn the dresses since as they're really not our style. I felt pressured into it and do believe that the cost should be factored into the wedding budget. I worked out that by the time we'd bought a wedding and engagement gift, travelled to the venue and bought drinks etc., their wedding day cost me nearly £400. I could've had a holiday for that. :(
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)
  • We've bought our flower girl's dresses (5 of the 6 are our nieces) plus we bought our nephews trousers and shirts each so they didn't feel left out!!! Actualy my Mum bought the dresses as once I showed her them she wrote me a cheque to cover the cost!
We also have a best woman each and planned on giving them £100 each towards their outfit, after some persuading we got my partners bw to accept but my bw flatly refused and can be just as stubborn as me! So instead we've paid £100 of their accomodation costs without telling her or her partner! I felt that this was fair as we don't want any say in colour or style, both will look fantatic whatever they wear and we want them to be themselves, just as we like them!
I do know (now!) how much there is to pay out for but if you do expect bridesmaids etc to contribute then it needs to be clear when you ask them.

  • Some of you ladies are so lucky!!!! I have my 3 sisters being my bridesmaids and so they are well aware of my financial implications. My little sister will qualify as a hairdresser this year so offered to do their hair and her friend will help but my 2 other sisters were pulling faces when i asked them to put some money in a card for them as a thank you to them both.

What also enraged me was they humb and haw about the things i choose for them to wear as we got to this month and still didnt have a dress for them but havnt once offered to pay for anything!!! I explained id pay for their dress and shoes but they still dont seem happy to buy a bag or pay for their make up!!!! Its a nightmare!!!! Spoilt sisters!!!!

  • I wanted to pay for my two adult BMs' dresses, so we only had two. I picked the colour and let them loose in a Dessy stockist to pick a style. With flowers, pressie and tiaras on top, each BM cost about £150... I got them their jewellery as their pressie and they bought their own shoes and handbags, and sorted their own hair/fake tans/make up. The one who lives locally took me to have my fingers and toes painted the day before as a treat :o They would have been happy to pay, but they are my best friends and I really wanted to see them looking beautiful and have them as part of our day :j
  • I’m going to be a bridesmaid and am honoured to be.

The bride, as is absolutely her right, has gone for pink in the bridesmaid dresses, a colour I hate and hasn’t been part of my wardrobe since I was about 7yrs old.

If the bride had asked me to pay, I would have. The friendship is worth more than the money. However, I would have resented buying something in such a loathsome colour knowing I would never wear it again.

I will offer to pay for shoes as I think it’s only fair and I’m more likely to be able to wear them again. I would also be happy to pay for a hairdresser as I would do so anyway if I was attending her wedding as a normal guest. Jewellery, again, I’ll be happy to pay for as I can wear it again.

My sister is exactly the same - she refused to even try the dress on today (3 days til the receipt runs out...) because she was feeling 'fat'. She's refusing to buy shoes or even give a little bit of help towards arranging everything!

My other BM can't do enough to help me!
