Tesco deep fat fryer recall - beware

Last December I bought an unbranded deep fat fryer (DF09) from Tesco Direct store in Chester at a low cost of £13.97. I have had no problems with it, but yesterday I received a recall notice from Tesco asking me to return the fryer to a store or arrange for it to be collected by phoning them.

I gave them a ring this morning to arrange for collection but was told that as I had not bought it on-line I had to return it myself to the original store. To get to the store in question is a 50 mile round trip. I explained to the chap on the other end of the phone that it would probably cost as much to return the item as I would get from a refund. His reply was, if you don't wish to return it please make sure that you dispose of it. When questioned about what the problem was with the fryer he said he didn't know.

Needless to say I wasn't very happy with this situation, but it appears all I can do is wave bye-bye to £13.97. and think twice about shopping with Tescos again.

If the store was close enough to buy it from its close enough to return it from. People should never buy items from stores they dont have means to return too.

Instead of making assumptions, trying reading the thread properly. I said it wasn't worth my while returning it to the store.

He gets it right sometimes...but other times he jumps in with both feet and gets it wrong. If you've still got the receipt I'd give Tesco another call with the details from it and hopefully they'll see a bit of sense and refund you and you can dispose of it safely.

I'm sure you live by a Tesco, they're like rats - never more than 6 feet from one. Take the receipt and take it to another Tesco.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to be the store you have purchased it from, you should be able to return it to any tesco store as long as they have a customer service desk, as it's a recall and a tesco branded product, you won't need a reciept. :beer:

His default position is that everyone's a liar, stupid, a scam-artist, or deliberately not telling us the full story.

On that basis I still suspect it's our dearly departed Tim, keeping the proportion of helpful/sensible posts just high enough to keep under the radar this time.

OP I am sure you will be passing a Tesco store at some point they are quite liberally scattered across the country. I think expecting them to collect it is unreasonable.

So I don't understand why you are getting on your high horse about it.

Was that december 09 or 08? And where did you find this out? I bought one for my mum in december 09, but don't see any mention here http://www.tesco.com/productrecall/
