For the Maldives, maybe consider doing a week first in Sri Lanka where theres loads of cultural stuff to see, then hit the Maldives to unwind. However, towards the end of August, there can be some fairly heavy showers in that region so suggest double check the climate.
One recommendation for the Maldives - go all inclusive as one island tends to have a single resort, and prices for food and drink are exceptionally high ($5 for a beer, $3 for water, $20 for lunch will soon add up). Also, just about every other couple when we met seemed to be on their honeymoon, which may be something you may not want !
We had some friends who went to the Comores near Madagascar and could not talk more highly of the place. However, August will be their winter.
Have fun wherever you end up. Our honeymoon was Venice/Florence/Rome which was ultra romantic, and as someone else said, cheap to get to meaning we could push the boat out on hotels/food etc.

I went to Taba heights in egypt for my honeymoon a few weeks ago, amazing place, very hot, you can just chill out by the pool all day your go to cairo for 2days, and do trips on boats and stuff.
We had a great time.http://taba.regency.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp0 -
I got a wedding invitation the other day, and inside was a little card saying that their wedding list was held at https://www.honeymoney.co.uk. Intrigued, I had a look and it is a fantastic site. Basically, you can choose all sorts of different experiences for your honeymoon and your wedding guests can get you something a bit more interesting than a saucepan. :T0
