Thanks to all who tried to help with this one. Illness means I'm limited as to how much I can do (or remember to do once online) Will try the mother board thing next, no drivers came with the monitor so keeping fingers crossed.M.E..... MORE than you know0

Just a thought but I'm sure you are aware that there have been problems with sound on a number of different laptops and PC's following Windows updates and this weeks updates for XP have caused fearful problems so may be an idea to check on Microsoft's site if there were any acknowledged difficulties associated with the updates from Tuesday this week.
Some of the problems were that BSOD was happening a lot but I've also had previously EXACTLY this same sound problem from installing an update.
Hope that helps.0 -
Thanks flossy-splodge but it doesn't seem to be an overall problem I hear sound through USB headphones but nothing from the speakers plugged in via jackplug.
I have now installed the drivers on the motherboard utiulities disc but no joy and the control panel still tells me I have no audio device available when the headphones are not attached.
I think I may need a specific driver but can't find one.M.E..... MORE than you know0 -
Hi Ashby,
Can you go start - run - type devmgmt.msc and click OK
Are there any items expanded ?
Can you go into your control panel open up sounds option and take a screenshot please
Your monitor is made by a company also called Digimate.

download drivermax its free and might find the missing drivers for you0

I would suggest you get realtek ac97 drivers making sure you speakers are plugged in correct socket download from link below and install
http://download.cnet.com/windows/audio-drivers/
that usually sorts out most xp sound issues failing that i reckon you got a hardware issue0 -

Expanded only Universal serial bus controllers.

Done this but can't work out how to insert it into my post. Sorry if this is really stupid of me.

Thanks,
You press Print Screen on your keyboard on the screen you want. Then open up Microsoft Paint (start - run - mspaint), insert the pic into paint (edit - paste), save the file. Then go to a website like imageshack, click upload and choose the file that you saved
Then you insert the picture into here, by copying the link for forums.
All the speakers on the monitor do is carry the audio from the external jack do the speakers. You do have the speakers connected to the correct port btw, (green). Sounds daft but I just want to rule that out

Thanks to you all.
Below I have copied what proved to be the cure of the problem for me.
3) Restart you computer, as it loading access the BIOS menu.
4) Use the down key to scroll down to 'Integrated devices' press enter to access it. Now go to sound and check if its off. In my case it was, if it is for you press the spacebar on it to turn it on.
5) Press ESC and then ESC again now make sure to pick 'Save and exit' and hit enter.
Once I had done this I just needed to put the mother board utilities disc in again which then showed I needed the driver for Realteck AC97 once I'd added that I was up and runningM.E..... MORE than you know0
