Speakers fail after XP reinstall

It was recently necessary to reinstall XP pro on my PC from start ie formatting the drive. So I am going along reinstalling hardware and programmes. I have a 17" TFT screen with inbuilt speakers which are now not working. Through control panel the Audio setting say I have no device attached. All the hardware is shown as working properly. The speakers attach to the speaker outlet on PC ie not USB. If I plug in my USB headset I get sound no problem it's just the speakers. There are no drivers on the disc for the screen (only a instruction manual I can't read in wordpad) and I can't find any online. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Where you install your driver is an option to search teh internet for drivers. Is this what you have done or have you done a google search yourself?

The manual's probably a PDF document if Wordpad doesn't open it, try installing acrobat reader.

Try and install the drivers for your audio -didn't you get a drivers disc with pc?
You may be running on basic windows drivers.

Look for the model number and make on the monitor and you should be able to look it up online for downloading the drivers again.
My lcd monitor has speakers too and it came with a disc to install the driver I think.

    Some thoughts.....

Open device manager (start - run - devmgmt.msc) and right click the option for sound codecs then choose uninstall and reboot, see if it picks up any new hardware

Have you installed the audio codecs for your motherboard model as it needs this to play sound through the onboard audio ports

When you go into control panel, what specifically does it say against the speakers. There's normally a drop down option where you can specify type of speakers used.

If that don't work, list your monitor manufacturer and O/S I can help you get the drivers.

Would that be on the motherboard utilities disk?
It diagnoses a missing VIA 8237 Serial ATA driver and VIA 41N1 driver, does this mean anything to you.

Only that there is no audio device present all details are greyed.

OS is Windows XP pro - monitor Hanon L-1715 (17" TFT)

It sounds as though you have failed to install any of the bespoke drivers for your system and its running on generic Windows drivers instead - not a particularly good idea if you want things to run optimally. Every now and then you'll come up against things that don't work at all (like now) or don't offer you all the options.

If you have your MoBo Utilities disc then by exploring it you should find an Audio option. If you open it it should contain an Open or Install file. Click on it and follow the on-screen directions and it should install the set of drivers for your soundcard/on-board audio. At the end of it you may or may not have to reboot your computer.

It would be a good idea to make sure that you install the other drivers as well - concentrating on things like CPU drivers; SATA/IDE drivers, on-board graphics, Ethernet - although presumably that's working OK as you're able to post - and any USB drivers. I wouldn't bother with the other add-ons that the MoBO manufacturer offers.

Having installed the drivers for you saoundcard/on-board audio you may need to add drivers for your monitor but I suspect that if you plug the audio cables in your soundcard will auto-detect it.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

Most likely, they're called "chipset drivers"

VIA 41N1 driver, does this mean anything to you.
Sounds like this, do you know the exact model of your motherboard, there are some freeware programs you can use to list the details of your board. I think one called HWINFO32

Only that there is no audio device present all details are greyed.
Doesn't sound right, but I'd work on the motherboard as it's most likely to fix your problem

OS is Windows XP pro - monitor Hanon L-1715 (17" TFT)
Work on the motherboard first, I don't think you'll need the drivers. All the monitors with built in speakers do is carry sound from the motherboard and externall through their speakers

I know ashby has as they thanked me for my specific post I made for them :)

I always highlight them in colours if I quote people so it stands out straight away

I suspect they just need to install the VIA 4-in1 chipset driver.
