Hi Lefoot, I am in the process of making three roman blinds just now and doing it without a 'kit'.
I am only using wooden poles (which cost 25p each from an arts & craft shop), cord (15p a metre), and brass eyelets (99p for 20).
I have the main material and the backing material, - so each blind has cost me about £18.

I am considering making roman blinds for some of my windows but have some questions.

Is there a maximum width you would go for?

Someone mentioned using 3 blinds for a large window; do you run the cords across the top of an adjacent one and have a separate cleat for it?

Has anyone fixed a roman blind to/infront of french doors? I have french doors with windows either side across the end of one room. Also, wider french doors out of the kitchen which have old vertical blinds at the moment.

If roman blinds are used for a 5 window round bay, do you fix the cleats to each window?

All the above windows are white UPVC.

    Thanks everyone.

I want to know this as well if anyone can help?

I have a 2m wide window, which I would like to make a roman blind for (if i can - never made one before)... I don't want 3 small blinds as I think it would look silly I think with the style of windows.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

    Hi Guys,
I eventually found all the threads on Roman Blinds, and have made an 'absolutely cracking' one at the total cost of £18. :T
Thanks to all for their advice, but most of all, thanks for the confidence you inspired in me to have a go. :j
I am now going to go on and make another 2...I might even be brave enough to make a scalloped edge at the bottom , :)
I have bought the main fabric for the next 2 from Dunelm's remnants bin, for the princely sum of £4.49 ;)
    Thanks again,
    Jackie

I can sew and used to make all my own clothes and have made many paris of curtains but although I can see making a Roman Blind should be easy its got me confused.

I am going to make three lined ones (she says hopefully)

what I want to know is do you sew (machine) the rod pockets (I've got kits) to the lining and the main fabric? Or do you sew to the lining and then catch the lining to the main fabric.

All those sums too, never was very good at maths :rotfl:

I'm no expert but I'm putting the rod pockets in the lining and stab stitching the lining to the face fabric....

I don't know the correct answer to sewing in the rods, but I'm guessing you'd have to be carefull if you just catch the right side rather than machining. Remember when the blinds are pulled up, your hand sewn stiches will be holding the weight of the material.

Someone who really knows will be along in a minute.
