DIY Roman Blinds

Hi all
DH and I have also taken the decision to make our own roman blinds even though we never made anything so complicated (I can sew a bit, he NOTHING - but he is an architect so he is VERY GOOD at measuring with precision!).
We looked at the cheapest made-to-order in M&S and even with a discount of 20% the total came up more than £400, for the whole bay (3 windows).
Let's keep each other updated on how our projects go, yeh? We are going to start after 15th September on our return from holidays.
Best of luck to all of us DIY OS craftspeople! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Roman blinds are really quite easy to do. You don't need to buy a kit - you can get a baton for the top, 6mm dowelling for rods and a flat baton for the bottom far cheaper from B&Q. Stick and sew velcro from fabric shop, and roman blind tape.(if you have time, get the tape, cord and velcro on ebay as it is vastly cheaper although dunelm mill isn't too bad) You also need some screw in eyelets and a cleat and toggle for holding it up.
I've made loads and they are really quite easy when you know how so I'm happy to help if possible!0 -
years ago i bought a boxed kit to make a roman blind. It was the type that was more gathered than "folded".I then had to get a baton fixed to attach it to.Can you still buy these basic kits. The shop I went to wanted £30 for an elaborate rail etc but i have made the simlper version.0

Do you mean an austrian blind? Lots of instructions on internet if you google. I made some years ago and hung on a standard plastic curtain track. You could also hang on a valance track. You don't need a kit. You will need to buy some cord and brass rings and maybe some weights to sew into the corners if blind doesn't hang right.
Good luck.0 -
oh whats the diffference between austrian and roman0

Hi all
After decorating our lounge recently, I have been looking at some Roman blinds for the large window (9ft).
I was shocked by the price that a couple of the blind companies want to charge me and wondered if its possible to make my own with nice fabric?
I am pretty good at sewing by hand and my MIL has a sewing machine, but I don't really know where to start!
Any help would be gratefully received.
Many Thanks
