kitten!!

Please, please, please do not consider acquiring a kitten from any of those "free to a good home" sites. Apart from supporting idiot amateur breeders who may not be taking proper care of their adult female (and they aren't in my opinion if they can't be a*sed to have their cat spayed) you don't know what health issues the kittens might have and they certainly won't be vaccinated. "Professional" cat-farm breeders often use those sites to offload kittens and the same health issues apply but you're in danger of supporting far worse things than just neglect of neutering, spaying and innoculations.
Rescues are often full-to-bursting with kittens, they will have been health-checked, wormed and had their first jabs. Often they will supply you with a FREE VOUCHER to take to the local vet for the kitten to be neutered or spayed.
Try the catchat forum as suggested or the purrsinourhearts one as well for details of local rescues. Often there are threads on the forums of rescue-folk desperate to find homes for kittens or nursing queens and their litters brought in. It's worth looking just to see the photos on those sites alone0 -

& I for one am very glad - stories of animals being dumped or drowned are horrible. A rescue will want to do a home check & not release one by itself - esp if friend works full time. Friend may need to go to a breeder. I thought this was unfair but as I live alone & my two are house cats (mostly - I have no actual garden but there is access to lawns) I realise that young pets especially are happier that way.
Many moons ago my childhood cat, Lucy, was dumped in a box with her siblings at my Mum's workplace. We got her because she was the runt, small & timid. We did love her to bits however & she had many years with us (21). Not all pets had her five star life & methinx it's better that pets are harder to source so people REALLY want one rather than pick one up on a whim (in my opinion).0 -
the animal shelters will be full of kittens soon as kitten season has started, definately take a look aounnd your local shelters. the charge for a kitten at say £70 at Rspca may seem expensive compared to a "free" kitten but they come flea, wormed, vacinated, chipped and usually with a free neutering voucher. the cost of this when you get a "free kitten" is a lot more than £70 and really adds up!!
I have two kittens- one was rescued from a lady who was going to dump her at rspca:mad: so i took her in. so far i have spent £75 on treatment and thats because i get it half price so would have been a lot more.
i knew the cost was going to be high though when i took her in so had resigned myself- i then got a kitten as a friend for her to play with so currently going through the same with him, all since febuary so the costs do mount up!
local rescues may have kittens for cheaper than rspca if you check your area and at least you know that this kitten has been given a new chance in life too.

lazyboi that's several old threads you've resurrected with links to that website which I presume you have some interest. suggest you stop (and perhaps go back and delete the posts) or you'll be reported for spam.0

Not all rescue centres ask that you take 2 kittens. I got a single kitten from my local rescue centre. If you do decide to get one from there then you probably have to go back a few times to get the right time because they go so quickly.0

Another idea; check with your local vets. Our own vet almost always has kittens and cats she's fostering and is rehoming. Some have been left with her as the owner doesn't want to pay the bill, some she finds left on her doorstep in boxes and some are animals that have been found by members of the public and taken to her surgery. She does a lot of free work for the local Cats Protection League so I think they help her out with rehoming as well. Also, there's almost always kittens/puppies etc advertised on the main noticeboard in her reception area.0

This thread is a year old - resurrected by someone who's resurrecting a number of old threads...!' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0

I can see that this is an old thread resurrected but actually it's a good time of year to remind ourselves about kittens and to consider where they come from.
I personally have no objection to Free to good home ads, (I wonder what happens to them otherwise) as long as stupid person is getting the mother cat neutered having learned a lesson that they can't profit from kittens. What I do object to is the shameless breeding for cash with exhausted mum cats with no thought for who they are mated with and what diseases they are catching. Usually the first litter get sold ok at this time of year then by the time they need to sell the next lot everyone who wanted a kitten has one. What happens to them then? Dumped on the street or worse and the shelters have to try and pick up the pieces with scant funding because people have cut back on giving (sorry, rant....)
Our small local rescue already has new kittens aswell as some from last year that were never found homes. So sad.:( I am a foster mum and still have a 7 month old from last year that no one wants!!!Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0
