Engagement Ring

PMSL.. like any woman with any sense woud want a ring that cost that.. Stupidity springs to mind regardless of how much inheritence you got!
It is what it symbolises that counts not the price tag.. Do you need a reminder of what this site is called????
If my OH got a me ring from a lucky bag I'd love it just the same.. it is what it means
Or.. do you have something to prove? Something to 'compensate' for? LOLLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Just read OP past posts....he's just received 60k inheritance,, has his own home and is looking at getting a second and currently saves 37% of his income.
That's quite true, pegginout.
However, although the OP said he saves 37% of his income (quoted on 15th May 2009), he also stated (on 6th May 2009):I virtually live in my overdraft! In fact I havent been out of it for about 6 years!
Most overdrafts COST money, so why on earth is somebody saving 37% of their salary?
Or have I somehow misconstrued Martin's key message about paying charges versus savings?
I wonder what the OP's parents (who've given him this inheritance early) think of plans to spend 20% of it on a ring that may just walk off on the finger of a woman who decides she no longer wants him a few years down the line.0 -
I know it's shocking, but not everyone (anyone?) tells the truth all the time on internet forums.

The engagement ring I bought for my OH, cost £120 btw, we picked it together, she would have had 2nd thoughts about me if I'd have bought one worth £12kFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
When DH and I decided to get married I made the decsion not to have a engagement or a ring. I know it sound really odd but we could not justify the expense at the time. His dad give me his grandmothers engagement ring which is lovely but I never wear it. too worried I might lose it! I really don't think the cost of a ring should make a difference. Surely its about loving that person and wanting to spend the rest of you life with them whatever. We had no engagement ring and a very simple wedding that cost a total of 1000.00 and that included the honeymoon. We have been married for 15yrs0

I don't think I'd accept a Marriage proposal from someone who wasted 12k on a ring. I'd view them as unbelievably bad at managing money and prioritising key expenses.
I'd also be too scared to wear it.
And, I'd far prefer that some of that money was spent on the wedding and the rest go towards to a house deposit savings account (even if that meant my ring cost 4.99 from Next - so what? It's just supposed to be a symbol, nothing more).
I'm learning my lesson the hard way when it comes to debt, but even before my LBM, the thought of spending 12k on a teeny, tiny ring that can be lost or stolen so easily seems.........ludicrous.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
Oh, and just out of interest......if you are willing to spend 12k on the engagement ring, how much are you prepared to spend on the wedding ring? And how about the wedding ring for yourself? Will you spend an equal amount on yourself, or will it only be your gf who will benefit from the inheritence money? Mmmmm.February wins: Theatre tickets0

Really?
That IS shocking.
So you mean that the OP may not actually be considering spending £12K on an engagement ring at all?
Wow!

And nuts/evangelists/idiots/people who take offense at anything.
We love them all
So which category am I in, then?
Oh, you missed out "sceptics" - I think that's more me. :j
Depending of course on what the posts actually say.....and how believable they are.0
